I like Alanis. When I was a kid me and my mom used to drive around listening to her on tape. Always "hands clean"... it was after she split with my dad for a while, ironically enough.

Does anyone want this tedious thread closed once & for all?

FaSho 11-19-2008 06:09 PM

I'm indifferent. It's gone downhill since the bumping though.

Arya Stark 11-19-2008 06:12 PM

Why do we need to close it?

>.<

Urban Hat€monger ? 11-19-2008 06:13 PM

Because it's boring and there are at least 15 billion other threads about selling out.

Astronomer 11-19-2008 06:14 PM

And I see a new Hilary Duff thread emerging from this sometime in the future.

Arya Stark 11-19-2008 06:20 PM

Oh.

Well I'm not on the billion other threads. =P

I'm on this one.

And ewh. Hilary Duff.

>.<

Maybe you should close it.

Aha.

But it could be worse, they could make no money, have no fans, and stop making music completely.

I believe this whole heartedly

When I say business I don't mean when it comes to writing the songs, I mean when it comes to marketing them.

Yes, why not?

A band who went from being punk, playing good music, to being a commercial, poppy sounding band didn't sell out, they just made a choice to appeal to a different demographic. Every band who makes a serious run at it is aiming to reach a certain level of success or popularity, it all depends on how much they are willing to devote to it. It's no more respectful to be playing small shows in local pubs and bars your entire career than it is to be playing massive stadium shows and selling action figures of the band next to the new CD. It's merely a business choice.

Any band that whines about how other bands sell out, how they will "stay true to their roots," and how they don't care about the money, all the while bashing every successful band out there for being a "sellout" are one of two things, idiots, or liars.

They're idiots for not realizing that the music industry is a business. As soon as you put out a record, you are in that business. You might want to just dabble, you might want to make it your full time job, but don't get up on your high horse calling it integrity that you're not successful.

Or they're liars because they really want all that money, fame, and success, but know they can't get it so they bitch and whine.

I agree.

I like all three of those. Though I wouldn't consider any of them "punk", ever. what ever happened to simplistic genres?

Arya Stark 11-19-2008 07:40 PM

I'm not a fan of genres.

I never know what to say when people ask what type of music I like.

I mean... I like... Rock...

But I also like other music

But not enough.

I just like music. End of story.

=P

I hate genres.
