Why do people call bands like Fall Out Boy and Good charlotte "Sellouts"?

"Selling out" implies that one has abandoned the values and morals they claimed to believe in order to gain something more superficial. In the sense of a band, it means they changed their sound/ethics to make more money. Anti-Flag sold out. But I don't get why the aforementioned bands "sold out" since they never showed even the slightest evidence of ethics or integrity?

sleepy jack 02-19-2008 04:05 PM

Fall Out Boy use to be a hardcore band, though they never released anything or got very far.

tjtech12 02-19-2008 04:10 PM

Yeah, Pete Wentz did used to play in hardcore bands. Bad example.

Lizzie 02-19-2008 04:22 PM

I don't really think that they are sell-outs at all, I just think they are horrible horrible bands

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-19-2008 04:25 PM

When someone says 'Fall Out Boy' sold out what they actually mean is 'Two years ago they were my favourite band and now I realise how shit they really are & now I have to say something to save face , so if I say they sold out it means I can get away with liking their early stuff , even though that stuff is just as bad as what they are doing now'.

You can look it up in the dictionary under 'Green Day effect , The'

lucylamppost 02-19-2008 04:38 PM

Don't bitch about Green Day. They've been around long enough, so if they want to make their music more commercialized, I say let em.

The band's sound is O.K to my ears and I don't buy their new stuff, so I feel no shame in calling myself a (gulp) fan.

Altough them playing on American Idol was the biggest sell-out performance in human history...

tjtech12 02-20-2008 05:16 PM

Their "American Idiot" album got me into Punk rock, and I still enjoy it, even if only for nostalgia's sake.

That's the thing - it isn't more commercialized. Everyone just seems to love pretending that Dookie wasn't poppy.

Far Beyond Driven 02-21-2008 07:25 PM

It's greenday's fault we have lame bands like falloutboy and goodcharlotte.

where would most people go to get there merch (hats, shirts, patches, cds, jackets blah blah)?
:hot topic
yep they sold out
and horrible in my opinion

sleepy jack 02-23-2008 03:38 PM

It's not like these bands announced they were out to do anything more than get money in the first place. They didn't have any morals or ideals to sell out on. I think people, particularly in the punk scene, throw around the world sell out far too much and use it as an insult for everything when most bands they apply it to never really sold out because they were never anything more than an outfit to make money. Sure, bands like Against Me! and Anti-Flag deserve to be called sell outs all they want because they actually did but Good Charlotte? Were they ever all DIY OR DIE!? Did they ever play anything more than lame pop-rock made for angsty preteens? Nope.

655321 02-23-2008 03:47 PM

you have an interesting point, im going to remember that

jackhammer 02-23-2008 05:49 PM

Punk is an attitude as much as a genre. If it is used to sell records then it is'nt Punk.

655321 02-23-2008 10:29 PM

i also agree wiht this

Farfisa 02-23-2008 10:46 PM

Any band that has merchandise at hot topic sold out........if they had like shirts and **** from bands that I actually like for a reasonable price.......yeah I'd shop there but I actually buy stuff from thrift stores now.

655321 02-23-2008 10:55 PM

yeah i tend to avoind buying new clothes, i feel like ive said this alot on this thread but i tned to go to second hand shops asin i agree wiht you

Marketing is a crucial part of running any business, which is what a band is in part. I think people mistakenly equate a bands increased popularity or success with being a sellout. thats not necessarily so.It's OK to make tons of money in every other career field. Why is music different? Nobody ever points the finger at the record company execs who, in many cases are the only ones getting rich off a bands success.
The whole Green Day plague on MB was annoying cuz' kids were associating GD with punk without any exposure to any other punk bands or any knowledge of the genre's history. Selling out is an artists intentional disregard of musical integrity for the sake of generating more income or widening their audience.
Bob Dylan was called a sellout when he made the great switch from acoustic folk to electric rock in 1965, but it was his artistic license to do. His response to people complaining that he wasn't writing political folk anthems was "write your own anthems". Amen.

jackhammer 03-04-2008 02:01 PM

Iron Maiden used merchandise very well as a marketing tool. It's not the products it's all about whose wearing them and why.

Alfred 03-13-2008 12:29 PM

I have a question. Why is this in the punk section?

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-13-2008 12:30 PM

To annoy people

Alfred 03-13-2008 12:37 PM

Or maybe it's because selling out has a lot to do with punk.

Green Day always have to be surrendered to inconclusive views. Green Day cant do nothing right, and why do you have to bring them up?

Alfred 03-13-2008 12:40 PM

Green Day fanboy strikes again.

DearJenny 03-13-2008 12:41 PM

I saw Against Me! mentioned earlier in the thread. When I hear their stuff on the "alternative" station in michigan I get depressed.

Good Charlotte already lost most of their fandom. And Fallout Boy is fading slowly. Their reign of teenage angst will soon come to an end.

Well done on finding the only 2 or 3 times i've mentioned them in about the past 2 years

rockalternativeindiepunk1 04-07-2008 05:01 PM

Should Fall Out Boy and Good Charlotte be in the punk section of music banter?

Yeah. Only album from them I really like though.

Its not that I think they sold out, its just that while their stuff was cool when they started out, its boring to hear them do the same crap like 15 years later.

I don't think they are sellouts, I just think they are trash. Also, selling out in music is the same as jumping the shark in TV, that's how I see it.

Inuzuka Skysword 04-07-2008 05:34 PM

Anything Green Day or Fall Out Boy has done has been crap. Neither did anything original at all and I have yet to find an ounce of soul in their music.
