On a serious not though, I would say either the clash or the who if you consider them punk, they were the pioneers of it anyways.

The SexPistols kick Bootay

Seltzer 12-15-2005 12:12 AM

I'm a real n00b in terms of punk. I liked that God Save the Queen song from the Sex Pistols. Also, I'll give props to Rancid. They have a good bassist and bass is life. On their live CD, they played Maxwell Murder, and their vocalist said "Give it up for the greatest bassist ever, Matt Freeman!" Sometimes, it makes me think people live with their heads buried in the dirt - Freeman is good, but not that great.

hiu 12-15-2005 02:33 AM

Mike Watt, bassist for the Minutemen and various other projects it a far superior punk bassist than Matt Freeman both in terms of his playing ability and ability to make amazing basslines. I suggest you try that band. Good job living in New Zealand also.

Ah ok. I was just looking at the tab for Maxwell Murder. It's fast yes. But it doesn't look that hard to play at all. Yeah, I'll check out Minutemen.

QueenNothing 02-01-2007 09:49 AM

hah, yeah no joke. Australia eh? Well lets put another shrimp on the BARBIE!!!Haha, jk...but yeah check out these bands....

Punk SKA-
Operation Ivy
Rancid
The Aquabats

SKA
Sublime

Punk-
Ramones
Sex Pistols
The Casualties
Lars Fredirkson and the Bastards
Dead Kennedyes
Dropkick Murphy's
The Clash

Social Distortion is a really great band also. I would definitley recommend them.

Loser 02-01-2007 03:18 PM

Check out a band called Chixdiggit there from canada and a insane punk band. Since I live close to canada I can see them live, soo much energy and not enough hype.

yeah. dude, i can't say anything mean cause i once had your same idea. but the only band anywhere near punk is green day. but you've made a start. papa roach and puddle of mud are hard rock bands. green day is a punk-influenced pop rock band. and the rest are pop rock. but you like hard rock, so you'll be able to handle some intensity and speed. i know you're in austrailia, but get to some large CD store, most likely in your local mall. buy anything by these artists:

Anti-Flag
Bouncing Souls
Bane
Bad Religion
The Clash
Discharge
From Ashes Rise
the FUs
Minor Threat
NOFX
Kid Dynamite
Rise Against
The Ramones
The Sex Pistols

that'll work for a long time.

acratertocoffin 02-02-2007 02:15 PM

My God, what is with restarting ridiculously stupid thread from a year ago and assuming that the last person will continue on as if they've been frozen in time and haven't evolved in music tates since 2005? This is the fourth one for God's sake.

I'm going to go ahead and give you the dirty little secret: You are not going to find any good punk in a mall. Every band you listed on there is well known by everyone except for Minor Threat and Bane. And you know why? Because they are the most easily accessible, mainstream crap you can find. I could go through every band on there and tell you exactly why they suck or why you're the reason that MC Lars made a song called "Hot Topic Is Not Punk Rock", but I think it would hammer the point home a little too hard. Here's a clue though, try going to a local show. Try: Don't go into a Hot Topic, scope out the T-Shirts and run home to Myspace those bands that you don't know but because they have anarchy signs and British flags on their shirt, by golly they simply must be punk rock. You're not going to find punk in a manual or a mall, you find it on your own.

On topic though:
Reagan Youth
One Way System
Black Eyes

White Lies 02-02-2007 09:02 PM

Minutemen
Saccharine Trust
Flipper
Big Boys
Defiance Ohio (awesome people)

The original post in this thread is ridiculous. How can anyone even consider Puddle of Mudd to be cool? It's ****ing outrageous! They are the most whiny, depressing, bland, dull, bog-standard, white, boring and personality-less band of all time. Calling them the coolest punk-rock band is the most ridiculous statement ever. They are about the furthest thing from punk-rock you could possibly get.

swim 02-02-2007 09:04 PM

The correct answer is Descendents.
