Folk Punk

Does anyone here have the lowdown on some good folk-punk (not celtic-punk)?

Rage Against the Machine 05-30-2009 06:27 PM

Andrew Jackson Jihad, Matty Pop Chart, Defiance Ohio, This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb...

cat in the hat 05-30-2009 06:40 PM

Damn >_< I already have those.....:(

Bane of your existence 05-30-2009 08:15 PM

Ghost Mice, Spoonboy

cat in the hat 05-30-2009 08:24 PM

Okay, I have no Spoonboy so I'll check that out. Thanks!

swim 05-30-2009 09:11 PM

Just because bands are on PIX doesn't mean they're folk punk such as matty pop chart. He is damn good though.

Young Pioneers
Mischief Brew
Rosa

i love w/ifs, but are they really folk punk? i would have put them more in a... i dunno... cabaret kind of style of punk.

Yea, otherwise it would be an arbitrary comparison. Wingnut has better songs.

bardonodude 06-14-2009 03:32 PM

i remember when i first got into the folk punk craze. It was pretty awesome...but after a while all those bands start sounding the same for the most part...except for neutral milk hotel

alliteration 06-14-2009 04:34 PM

Yeah, I used to love stuff on PIX and the like. Now I find most of it to be pretty boring and generic. I guess you can only do the dirty hippy punk for so long.

crazymenrunningback 06-15-2009 01:23 PM

Acoustic or fold punk always seemed to interest me but I never got that into it

JKSmith 06-22-2009 06:40 PM

Violent Femmes

sleepy jack 06-22-2009 06:40 PM

I wouldn't really call them folk punk in the modern sense.

JKSmith 06-22-2009 06:51 PM

Modern sense? Elaborate.

rancidvat87 06-23-2009 02:04 AM

ive done some shows with a lot of folk punk bands(im from the same city as ghost mice (bloomington indiana) and trust me i dont think any of these guys are gonna get tired of it anytime soon myself included. folk punk is only gonna get bigger dude>

Violent & Funky 06-24-2009 08:06 PM

For folk punk you should check out Defiance, Ohio...

lePetiteCrab 06-30-2009 01:53 PM

Do the Pogues count?

Stone Birds 06-30-2009 02:01 PM

just look at early bright eyes albums

BTown 07-01-2009 05:52 PM

Wingnut Dishwashers union, he also goes by the name Pat The Bunny, and Johnny Hobo and The Freight trains.

He's homeless and lives in his car. He has friends that run a site and MySpace for him. If i were to ever be in some huge popular band I would definitaly take this guy on tour with me, such a cool dude.

Wingnut Dishwashers Union : Spare Change Records

lofi and folk punk are kind of different.

FaSho 07-04-2009 10:09 PM

All you need is AJJ and Nana Grizol.

+81 07-04-2009 11:01 PM

Nana Grizol you say....I might have to look into that.

Stone Birds 07-05-2009 01:26 AM

Fevers & Mirrors (most songs on this works for this thread, usually better live though)

What makes it folk is the music, what makes it punk is the vocals

simplephysics 07-05-2009 12:36 PM

Listen dude, bright eyes aren't really folk punk.

Defiance, Ohio are pretty good.. to whoever mentioned them down there.
They offer free downloads of all their albums here: download audio files

FaSho 07-05-2009 12:51 PM

I see them get compared to AJJ a lot, who I love. I'll check them out.

bass_girl 07-22-2009 12:57 PM

I'm on a huuge Tossers kick lately. <3 love.

takamine_x2 07-30-2009 03:15 PM

Wow, I can't believe I saw no reference to Flogging Molly on this thread. - Perhaps I'm too old to be hip?!

franzfergidon 08-19-2009 02:04 PM

Does Gogol Bordello count? I love them.

Foxie 08-21-2009 11:47 AM

I dont know if you would exactly call this punk, i know i sure as hell wouldnt, but this is really the only modern, but this is the only english band i follow that's not that well known in america , but there a pretty good band

yyyoshiii 08-21-2009 08:43 PM

lol wow

haha thats definitely not folk punk foxie.
more like world music?
i think gogol counts tho.

im a huge folk punk fan
i guess it opened my eyes to all the hippies in the world. theyre cool people.

recently got into frank turner.
his acoustic stuff. its not extremely punk, but his roots are definitely punk (million dead). its decent music none the less.

i do wish i could find another band as talented as mischief brew. no luck in all my months of searching. in my opinion, w/ifs and andrew jackson jihad just dont compare. mischief is unique. ugh. i love them.

suggestions no one has mentioned -
beans on toast
against me's earlier stuff.

simplephysics 08-22-2009 12:00 AM

Calling Friendly Fires 'world music' is just as big a stretch as calling them Folk Punk. They're an electronic/disco kicking indie band.

Dano 08-24-2009 07:18 PM

You guys all ahve a very ecclectic taste in music
