Sonic Youth is art rock / experimental punk.

I was reffering to the category this thread should have been in.

Dino Jr. I love the feel they bring to their songs, even the newer ones. "You're Living All Over Me" is fantastic as well.

Only 12 year old Jonas Brothers fans and metalheads. I'm a diehard Dinosaur Jr fan but strangely I don't feel the need to shove my music down other people's throats or get angry at people for not liking it.

Oh and... I get to see them live on October 6th! I can't wait it's right after I get my neck brace off too!

This has to be the most genre-anal post I've read in awhile, congratulations.

Anyway I'm choosing Dinosaur Jr. I like Sonic Youth and when I listen to them I like it but I never really find myself putting it back on. Which is the opposite with Dinosaur Jr. I could listen to You're Living All Over Me for the rest of my life and die happy.

Mr Sensitive 08-26-2009 03:23 PM

I'm going with Dinosaur Jr. I never really got into Sonic Youth. Kim Gordons vocals really grate me for some reason.

Plus I can't get enough of You're Living All Over Me at the moment.

Eberger0001 08-30-2009 11:43 AM

I would have to say earlier Sonic Youth, like "Dirty" and before. Though I did enjoy Sonic Nurse.

Dinosaur Jr is a damn good band, though!

captured 09-04-2009 10:13 PM

Dinosaur Jr.

Can't help but like them, but I'm probably biased I ahevnt heard that many Sonic Youth songs

jtwilliams 09-04-2009 10:18 PM

I have to go with Dinosaur Jr.

I cannot listen to Sonic Youth. I just can't stand the extreme feedback noises.
Im not saying theyre a bad band, just not my cup of tea.

Dinosaur Jr. on the other hand is a band I have been missing out on for some time now. I love the dynamic, the bass, the drums the guitar its all great!

Zen 09-05-2009 06:21 AM

Neither of these are punk like, but that doesn't really matter.

Sonic Youth are one of my favourite bands, Dinosaur Jr are not however much I like some of their stuff, Sonic Youth just holds a special place in my music collection. Love them.

Seragon Ripper 09-07-2009 08:08 PM

Sonic youth

Phillyboy 09-14-2009 12:03 AM

The Youth all the way for me, really not even a fair competition. I like Dinosaur Jr but SR are just soo much better in everyway. J Maciscs is a amazing guitar player and an all around musician and I like there cover of "Just Like Like Heaven" just as much as the Cure's version. but besides lead guitar ( asnd that a big maybe ) Sonic Youth's, drums, bass, vocals, rhythm, song structure was so much better.

Violent & Funky 09-14-2009 01:41 AM

I don't think they are really all that comparable outside of their noise freakouts and when they released their albums (Yes, I know they were admirers).

Dino Jr. was always at their best when they made simple, post-punk songs that rocked your socks off. Sonic Youth was at their best when they were exploring long, artsy pieces...

Farfisa 09-14-2009 10:47 AM

Both bands also hype the Jazzmaster to a certain degree. I'm more of a noise person so Sonic Youth is my answer.

clutnuckle 09-27-2009 03:37 PM

Sonic Youth made Daydream Nation... Which is something I'll never be able to overcome. That album hit me like a ton of bricks the first time.

Dinosaur Jr. aren't at all bad though... It's just too tough for them to overcome Sonic Youth.

loveissucide 10-19-2009 05:19 PM

Sonic Youth. The fact they've kept exploring new avenues of experimentation, innovation and weren't afraid of failure is a huge factor. As is the fact the original Dinosaur lineup fell apart before fufilling it's potential.

lars 10-22-2009 04:18 PM

I love sonic youth! I love Goo.. the album

James 01-06-2010 12:04 PM

Dinosaur jr for me although sonic youth are very experimental and daydream nation rocks. Dino are much more consistent ever album has some great songs my fav album by them is Your Living All Over Me.

indietrash3 01-06-2010 01:55 PM

The hipsters of today feel that Sonic Youth has held up better than Dino Jr?

Thats not really fair to say. ;(

John Henry Hymns 01-10-2010 10:52 AM

Dang this is a hard decision. I love both bands. You're Living All Over Me is a great album and Daydream Nation is a great album. I'm gonna have to vote Sonic Youth though, I've been listening to them longer and I like them a bit more I suppose.

Shake 01-10-2010 12:17 PM

Listening to Farm, by Dino Jr. right now, so my vote has to go to them :) I'm not really a Sonic Youth fan. Not because I don't like them, but I've never really listened to them aside from the couple songs that enevitably get put on at work by my boss who is a SY fan.

Jester 01-10-2010 09:36 PM

Then is it really fair to vote for Dinosaur Jr.?

Well, The only other album of their's that I know and love is Bug. And it's definitely comparable. It has their trademark lo-fi sound, and J's voice is as awesome as I rememberd it :)

Beyond is the only other album you could compare it to. It doesn't really sound like any of their earlier work...

ansam 01-16-2010 05:32 PM

All of DJ's albums have been pretty good, but I get more enjoyment out of SY.

Beretta Minx 01-19-2010 02:50 PM

tough choice
but when it comes down to it, personally sonic youth dig a bit deeper

Sgt Pilcher 01-21-2010 02:23 PM

I would have to go with Sonic Youth, mostly just because of how much I love their crazy guitar style. Tough decision though.

clutnuckle 01-25-2010 06:36 PM

Dinosaur Jr have released some very good albums, but Sonic Youth have actually released albums that are out of this world (Daydream Nation/Bad Moon Rising). Even if they did that just once (they did it more than once, but just for the sake of argument), then they're more impressive.

Personally, I view You're Living All Over Me on the same level as Daydream Nation as far as outta-this-world-ness...

gogojessicat 01-25-2010 08:41 PM

okay random -- my mommy went to high school with Lee Renaldo. apparently he was good pals with my uncle.

To each his own. You're Living All Over Me is definitely a great album, but Daydream feels thematic to me.

Farfisa 03-25-2010 12:26 AM

Sonic Youth wins... there seems to be no more actual responses to this thread so I would close the poll portion... my reasoning being noob bumpage.

Dr_Rez 03-25-2010 12:54 AM

How can one even argue with the guitar work in Living All Over You? Now I love Sonic Youth but come on now!

Nt to mention DJR is still coming out with awsome ****.

littlebatty 04-03-2010 12:24 PM

musically i don't think they're punk--they don't have the musical ineptitude or drawn out aggression of punk-- but their practice is definitely influenced by it

MaxWilde 04-21-2010 09:49 PM

sonic youth. there has never and will never be anything like it.

TheCunningStunt 04-21-2010 09:51 PM

I voted Dinosaur JR through ignorance really, I've not really heard much Sonic Youth. Just heard Goo a couple of times..

I'm clearly the Dinosaur fanboy in this debate, but you really owe it to yourself to find Daydream Nation...
