Dinosaur Jr vs Sonic Youth

Which band do you like better and why?
ps. I just got home from work and am to lazy to write anymore (although I may edit in some more later)

siamesedream 07-07-2009 12:03 AM

I like Sonic Youth, but I love Dinosaur Jr

Dinosaur is just all around better songwriting, and J's guitar solos are absolutely unbelievable. Sonic Youth is probably more experimental and original in alot of ways, but I just worship Dinosaur. One of my favorite bands.

Both are still releasing great albums after 20+ years though. I don't think there are many bands who have as consistently great catalogs.

Gone Sugaring 07-07-2009 12:08 AM

Daydream Nation is one of my favorite albums of all, so I'll have to go with Sonic Youth although I really love both. I agree with siamesedream in the sense that both bands are still releasing great albums, although... Farm > The Eternal.

SATCHMO 07-07-2009 12:29 AM

J. would totally whoop Thurston's ass.

Daydream Nation really is great, and probably is the best Sonic Youth album. One of the best albums of the 80s

and I agree, Farm > The Eternal...Farm is one of Dinosaur's best. I'd put it at #3. The Eternal is probably somewhere in the middle of the Sonic Youth catalog, at least 5 albums are better.

treeson 07-07-2009 11:33 AM

:hphones:they're both great

GravitySlips 07-07-2009 06:00 PM

sonic youth.

Son of JayJamJah 07-07-2009 06:16 PM

These are both bands I'd heard of and never listened to until I got here. I'm not really into either very much, but I can certainly see the appeal and the comparison.

I prefer Sonic Youth because their is a more raw and palatable quality to it, DJ seems like a bunch of really good musicians playing music that generally doesn't appeal to me, but playing it really well.

I just got the remastered "You're Living All Over Me" from Dinosaur Jr.

Anyone got any thoughts on what I should keep an eye out for on this record?

Robotnik 07-07-2009 06:34 PM

Sadly I've not yet listened to Farm or the Eternal, so based on their back catalogues I'd probably go with Sonic Youth.

Both are phenomenal, but I've liked SY longer and they mean more to me.

GravitySlips 07-07-2009 06:35 PM

From You're Living All Over Me, my favourite moments:

- Little Fury Things, amazing explosion at the intro and awesome fuzzy guitars, same with the outro.

- Sludgefeast, great intro again with awesome fuzzed out riff, lovely section in the middle where the distortion calms down for 10 seconds before re-exploding.

- Raisins

ah I love most of the album, but I'm too stoned to explain really. I'm not sure what you like, but I hope you dig it... my favourite is probably Bug though (but only just).

Ricochet~kun 07-08-2009 08:16 AM

I'm going to have to say dinosaur JR. Their music catches me in a way the Sonic Youth's does not.

Sneer 07-08-2009 05:29 PM

Oh my... too difficult to call. On the one hand i think DJ are better songwriters, yet on the other hand i love SY's experimental (certainly their 80's and early 90's output anyway) approach. I suppose DJ do it for me a tinsy bit more.

sweet_nothing 07-08-2009 07:31 PM

I only have You're Living All Over Me by Dinosaur JR and I thought it was pretty good, but I'm much more into Sonic Youth.

Inuzuka Skysword 07-09-2009 06:13 AM

Love both bands, but Sonic Youth's songs are a bit more intense. Daydream Nation is a good record, but I prefer Sister. The Pipeline/Kill Time song is a perfect intro into one of my favorite Sonic songs, Tuff Gnarl.

music_phantom13 07-10-2009 09:57 PM

Wow. This is a very, very difficult call. These are two of my favorite bands. Sonic Youth has some really, really amazing experimental albums and I actually loved Rather Ripped and Eternal. I think I'd have to say Dinosaur Jr though. When I listen to You're Living All Over Me, not only is it one of the albums that got me into music, it's been a soundtrack to a lot of great events in my life when I think about it. Particularly relating to skating, which I love and miss. Also, listening to old Dinosaur Jr, you can feel them pouring everything they have into their music. They just sound like they live for the next time they can play. Their new stuff is great to, that feeling is still sort of their but not in the way it was on You're Living All Over Me and Bug. Both of them are bands that never made it as big as they should have but were absolute gods among the early alternative scene. I also consider Dinosaur Jr to be one of the most influential bands of all time in 80's - present day rock. Sonic Youth is up there to, but not to the same extent.

I would say SY are MUCH more influential than Dinosaur Jr, actually. Not that that's really important, just sayin'

I think it depends. Obviously Sonic Youth was an influence on Dinosaur Jr. I think Sonic Youth had more of an influence on the indie scene that emerged in the 90s and still exists today, but Dinosaur Jr. had a great impace on the grunge scene that exploded right around the time they went major label...

thesilencebureau 07-13-2009 02:36 PM

I got to see SY play recently and up to now have never an occasion to listen to Dinosaur Jr. I'll have to check them out.

Oh... so my vote would have to be SY.

nickn 07-20-2009 10:23 PM

i like sonic youth. They seem more creative then dinosaur jr. they use prepared guitars and weird tunings and dinosaur jr just write fun rock songs. not to say that dinosaur jr isnt creative without a sound is a great album and all but sonic youths writing is just cooler.

You probably haven't given Dino Jr. the proper listen if you think Without A Sound is their best work...

notoriousjpp 07-21-2009 01:36 PM

"Rather Ripped" by Sonic Youth has some of the best songs my ears have ever heard...like 'Pink Steam' and 'Incinerate.'

Yowza.

I've listened to all their albums and I think Without A Sound is definitely up there. Maybe as a whole not their best album, but it certainly has some of their best songs on it.

mr. goth glam 07-22-2009 08:17 AM

I'm going with SY, and I think that's largely because I got into them a good few years before I got into Jr.

Both kick ass though.

lucifer_sam 07-22-2009 09:58 AM

Sonic Youth has the cool. DJR has a great songwriter.

not much of a contest for me. there are bits and pieces of the Youth i really like, but as a matter of songwriting Dinosaur Jr. wins hands down.

It has 'Feel the Pain' and that's about it...

debaserr 07-22-2009 02:21 PM

I have tried both a them a good deal (2-3 albums each). I haven't liked either much at all...

Which albums have you tried?

Davey Moore 07-24-2009 04:30 PM

Daydeam Nation is an absolute masterpiece in my mind, and it means a lot to me, so any fault Sonic Youth made after that I could care less, they win, hands down.

The Monkey 07-25-2009 11:46 AM

Since when is Sonic Youth punk?

They're close enough for it to be appropriate.

Maybe indie /alternative may have been more appropriate

desylina 08-01-2009 09:35 PM

I like Dinosaur Jr

Grunge_Junkie 08-07-2009 12:29 PM

Sonic Youth. I listen to more of their stuff than Dinosaur Jr.

No, no, no. "Alternative" is not a genre. "Indie" is not exactly a genre either, something can't be solely "indie." Indie stands for independent. Yeah, I do call stuff indie (genre), because indie has become more than just meaning "independent," but it's still not a genre. I guess it's like psychedelic, it's more like an action.

Sonic Youth is art rock / experimental punk.

TumorAttitude 08-19-2009 07:42 PM

They both bore me.

franzfergidon 08-19-2009 07:44 PM

I'd say Sonic Youth. At least they didn't almost bore me to sleep.
I fear I'll get flamed for that comment.

I was totally surprised when no one gave a **** either. Really only 12 year old Jonas Brothers fans flame when someone doesn't like their favorite band. Isn't this forum AWESOME?
