I remember seeing it on Spotify, near Goo. I wasn't crazy over Goo, it had its moments but some parts bored me a little.. Is Daydream Nation better?

It's an American classic. At the bare minimum, listen to 'Teen Age Riot'...

Listening to Daydream nation at the moment, I'll be sure to listen to Teen Age Riot. I've figured out what I don't really like about Sonic Youth. The singing style, well talking style.

Man, get past the stupid voices and listen to those distorted guitars!

Yeah that's the key to liking Sonic Youth I think. Usually I can dislike a band if the lyrics aren't good and/or delivered badly. The stupid voices are pissing me off even though the guitar work is good. :(

You do know Thurston is about 8 feet tall? Thurston could probably pick him up by the cranium and then tie him in a knot like a shoelace!

Sonic Youth are probably my favourite band that are still performing and 'Evol' is my all time favourite album, well joint top with 'Ostrich Churchyard'.

And if there is a cooler, sexier, more amazing nearly-60-year-old woman on the planet than Kim Gordon than let me know please.

I'm going to see Dinosaur Jr. soon when they tour here with Built To Spill.

I've been dipping my toe into Sonic Youth for a while now, finally started to 'get' them. My favourite at the moment is Goo but I've only heard 5 of their albums. Evol was the one I liked the least, is there something I'm missing with that album? Just seemed to drag for me..

Goo is actually one of my least favourite Sonic Youth albums.

To my mind everything from Evol to A Thousand Leaves is better than Goo.

TheCunningStunt 04-23-2010 12:02 PM

I just found Evol really dull and slower paced than Goo.
What's wrong with Goo? :(
I like Goo, but I'm still trying to find their best albums. Not listened to A Thousand Leaves so I can't comment.

I think albums have to have the correct setting to be fully appreciated.

'Evol' is a dimly lit room, late at night album that is coming out of speakers album; not really a sitting on a bus, going to work and listening to an iPod album.

TheCunningStunt 04-23-2010 12:05 PM

I'll be sure to give it another go, since it takes a while for some albums to really worm their way into my affections but for now Evol is a no likey. :(

Don't get me wrong I don't dislike Goo it's just the last album out of that run that I'd pick out.

There is good stuff on it 'Dirty Boots', 'Mote', 'Disappearer' etc.

I love both of these bands, but I give my vote to Sonic Youth. They just have so many levels.

As for "Evol", I consider it to be their early masterpiece. Everything essential that SY was and what they will be from that moment on is on that album.

It was tough for me to choose. I love Dinosaur Jr.--J.'s solos are amazing, but I think SY is better and has put out many more quality albums. SY also has a more diverse sound and are more willing to experiment, which I admit sometimes doesn't turn out well, but I still appreciate it. I also need to listen to the SYR albums again. I listened to them all in a span of two days a few months ago but I don't remember a whole lot except thinking that they were all really experimental, which I don't find to be a bad thing. I should give them another chance.
