I disagree with both halves of this statement.

I don't think the Pixies invented it. They were a great band but they were a part of a long evolution of style that included a lot of other bands.

And I don't think Nirvana did it better. Because, well, they weren't that great. Certainly not better than the Pixies.

I actually added more to my post right after I wrote it, but I think we cross-posted there.

Yeah, I just caught it.

I was asking because I was curious what bands you thought led to what the Pixies were. Maybe I haven't bothered to really explore earlier than the Pixies as far as their style goes, but despite the fact I can pick out influences on the Pixies they were fairly original.

All influences, no doubt...but hardly anything like the Pixies. Though I can't speak for Husker Du...I've yet to give them a good listen.

I think the point people were trying to make on the Pixies is that if they had started out in the 90's they would have no doubt been considered grunge. They basically kickstarted that genre and receive no credit for it amongst your casual music fans.

I completely agree that Nirvana didn't make it better...in fact, Nirvana are a lame rip off of the Pixies and even admitted as much.

I dont agree 100% with that I think they were a bit too close for comfort to the pixies but still had their own style, but the pixies are better.
