I think its actually a very fair fight, considering that Nirvana were highly influenced by the Pixies. I`m a huge Nirvana fan, but admit the whole thing was blown out of proportion and now everybody and his brother, along with millions of people who know f**k about music love them. This sort of thing though, can often occur when somebody dies like Cobain did.

I disagree that the Foo Fighters are better than Nirvana as well. David Grohl certainly learnt a lot about songcraft from Cobain, and quickly put out his own Nirvana influenced sound, but in the most life affirming and upbeat way and thus created his own sound. For that reason I really like the Foo Fighters and have most of their albums.

While I do think that Cobain's death is what made Nirvana legendary, it's certainly not what made them popular. They were already huge before he killed himself.

honestly i would have to go with Nirvana. They are so much better. im sorry. truth hurts lmao. but seriously. the ****in rock. they are pretty much all i listen to. dont get me rong. i love the pixies but. come on guys really. PIXIES! no! NIRVANA! there both great bands but nirvana jus has more feeling in the music and thats what i look fer in music. ~peace~

Nirvana totally! I'll admit the Pixies did influence Kurt quite abit, and if not for the Pixies, they're may of been no Nirvana, but in the same... I only know about the Pixies because Kurt talked about them in an interview, and my band teacher told me the Pixies and R.E.M. rock, so I got all the Pixies albums, and yeah, Pixies kick a**, but! Nirvana is better in my mind

As good as Nirvana was and Nevermind changed music in the nineties but I don't think they would have been able to do that without the Pixies. Not that I think cause of Pixies there was Nirvana means that the former was better. Doolittle and Bossanova are far better than anything Nirvana ever produced.

Personally i'm a long time Nirvana fan but i'll deffinately have to check the Pixies out. I've only heard OF them never got around to listening to them myself.

Pixies. And it's not even close.

Nirvana basically took the Pixie's template and sucked out the interesting bits - the humour, the oddness and the androgyny. I'd much rather be listening to a demented Black Francis yell about incest, deformity, horse lard, the old testament, alien abduction etc and use the odd bit of mutant Spanish, than hear Kurt throwing undignified, attention seeking temper tantrums (RAPE ME! I HATE MYSELF AND WANT TO DIE!!)

And musically, Nirvana just sound too plain, and a decent drummer ain't enough to save 'em. There's none of the violence and the hooligan art, or gleeful surf melodies and wacky spaghetti western noise you can hear from a Pixies record.
