Well Nirvana do have metal influences, especially on Bleach, namely being Black Sabbath and some crossover-thrash bands such as Clown Alley, but they have more punk influences than metal influences in my view. To me their music is well and truly under the alternative rock banner rather than metal itself. The thing is with the grunge label is that while many bands were labelled 'grunge' there was a lot of diversity in sound and you have more metal-sounding bands like Alice In Chains being categorised along with more punk-sounding bands such as Nirvana and Mudhoney.

Come On Pilgrim has one of my favorite songs by Pixies, which is "Caribou". If the remastered edition, which is the ones coupled with "Surfer Rosa" is available at a price cheaper then the one just by itself I say it is worth it.
"Surfer Rosa" no matter what is with it is an essential album. I had an ex girlfriend who said she loved "Where Is My Mind?" because of Fight Club (who doesn't it seems) and I told her to buy "Surfer Rosa", she did and wound up thinking it sucked and took it back and bought Floyd or some crap instead... thought, uggghhh... give it more of a chance, let it grow on you. "Surfer Rosa" to this day, has one of the best production sounds of all-time, it is just amazing... easily amongst the best Steve Albini has done, it is just magical sounding. "Come On Pilgrim" may not be as good, but it is tacked on at the end of "Surfer Rosa", and is just bonus tracks on that edition. It is a single disc, not a double disc by the way. Pixies at their best are amongst the greats, Pixies at their worst... are still great. It may not be the best of Pixies, but it is not bad either. "Caribou" and "Nimrod's Son" are still cool. I would say get that version.

Yeah... it is difficult to say. Grunge has roots in a few styles, that trying to put it in one genre or the other is difficult.
Essentially I believe grunge was a form of music that took it's inspirations from hardcore punk and sludgy metal like Black Sabbath. So trying to catagorize the style as a whole becomes difficult, depending on what band you are basing your catagorizing on. Mudhoney owed more to the punk, they had more of an influence from hardcore, while Tad owed more to the Sludgy sounds of Black Sabbath. Each band will either mix the sounds well, or lean towards one or the other.. But then you get into say a band like Thread or Truly.... they add elements of psychedelic... and other styles. Trying to pidgeonhole grunge to metal or punk can prove difficult, because it owes to both, and as i say, depends on the band you are basing your view on.
