I think its actually a very fair fight, considering that Nirvana were highly influenced by the Pixies. I`m a huge Nirvana fan, but admit the whole thing was blown out of proportion and now everybody and his brother, along with millions of people who know f**k about music love them. This sort of thing though, can often occur when somebody dies like Cobain did.

I disagree that the Foo Fighters are better than Nirvana as well. David Grohl certainly learnt a lot about songcraft from Cobain, and quickly put out his own Nirvana influenced sound, but in the most life affirming and upbeat way and thus created his own sound. For that reason I really like the Foo Fighters and have most of their albums.
