I'm not a huge fan of the Buzzcocks but surprised nobody has mentioned their debut which is a great album, or are the Buzzocks too pop-punk for you hardcore elitists on here?

I love The Buzzcocks. Another Music... is fantastic, as is Spiral Scratch and Singles Going Steady is one of the greatest compilations of all time. Nothing wrong with a bit of Pop Punk.

As for best Punk album. London Calling. If you disregard all subgenres and focus on pure Punk. For sure.As for first wave Punk albums, I'd say The Clash had the best debut too. I think The Slits, The Adverts and The Banshees deserve a mention though, they haven't been brought up much. Cut is a classic.

I'd take the Clash debut over London Calling everytime.

they only work well in comps, the actual albums have a number of filler

Singles Going Steady is great

Its because bands like Siouxsie & the Banshees normally get included under the post-punk category, at times its a very gray area between punk and post-punk.

I tend to think punk bands of the late 1970s (pre-hardcore era) fell into three areas.

Punk- As the name suggests, straight-up punk.
Punk/New Wave- More melodic bands that straddled this line, Buzzcocks are a good example.
Punk/Post-Punk- Bands expanding out of the basic creative confines of punk, whilst still retaining a punky feel.

I've just been listening to their second album Love Lies and have to now say that's just as good as the debut. I've also got to say that the Buzzcocks are now a very good band.
