They have changed styles a few times. Their first album was straight Death Metal (and one of my favorites as well), then they added some Black Metal into it for the next album, then went straight ahead Black Metal... and then went Crust.

Yes I know, I've got some old & new Darthrone kicking around somewhere, obviously considered one of the pioneers of blackened crust, but like Carcass I consider them a metal band through & through, so I opted not to add them.

(Now that the weather is starting to get nice, I sort of want to get this done, so trying two entries per day. If you been following this you may want to back up)

Well here we are, the godfathers of grind, starting off as a hardcore punk band, Napalm Death pushed the boundaries of how hard music could go in the 80's, subsequently pioneering grindcore in the process. I picked fairly tame songs though.

Adding grindcore heavywieghts Nasum to the list. A band that was on route to becoming one of the most popular grindcore bands of the modern era, until the lead singer was tragically swept away in the 2004 Tsunamia, the group disbanded shortly thereafter.

Allright when I first did my list I went on a rant against the cheesy posing out going on in beatdown hardcore, to which I assigned the blame unfailry to bands like Biohazard & Hatebreed. Anyhow, anyone who thinks that NYHC inspired hardcore is the rock equivelant to gangster rap is in for rude suprise, it's quite the opposite.

TRC are one of Britain's leading hardcore bands at the moment. Most modern UK hardcore bands are American influenced, as is the case with TRC who comes from a bit of a different place than Gallows. During the 90's, NYHC's influence began to spread to London with the formation of bands like Knuckledust, resulting in a beatdown scene. Some of their early stuff...is less than stellar, but now they kick much ass.

I listed Discharge a while back, which was considered a lowball by some. The reason for this is that the core talent of the group in my opinion was guitarist Tony Bones, who went on to form his own band Broken Bones.

After that, Discharge was never the same, and no matter which way you look at it, they tried to sell out with the release of Grave New World. Meanwhile Tony Bones was beginning to take UK 82 in a harder direction, before either The Exploited or English Dogs attempted the venture. (chosen softer songs)

Nevertheless, this band had its shortcomings. I've picked one song in particular that highlights the pitfalls of this otherwise great band. The guitar intro to the song F.O.A.D. (**** off and die) showcases Tony Bones at his finest, but after the lead in, the song falters into your standard mediocre punk song. I am of the personal opinion that if Cal had been on vocals and had some direction in the songwriting, that the two of them would have done wonders as Discharge. Unfortuantly the leaders of UK punk have a history of imploding.

I think I mentioned that this is a pretty Anglo Saxon list, but that Hardcore is pretty huge throughout Latin America & Southern Europe. This is one of the bigger bands out of Spain, and one of my personal favs.

Allright time to move over from the Spanish speaking world to Portugese, with the kings of Brazillian hardcore Ratos de porão. I could never get into these guys, but they kept it hard & heavy, eventually becoming a major influence for Sepultura.
