Hey, for the record, I didn't intentionally make a crossover battle. I just picked two albums that I thought may provide an entertaining fight.

Okay, so Cro-Mags win...

So onto the Newkie suggested battle:

vs.

The Damned return again, with their debut album this time.

Now, go....

There's something about the Stranglers that I just don't get. The sound of even their oldest stuff seems to lack punk ethos despite their clothes and stage presence. I have a hard time understanding the exact meaning of 'pub rock' but The Stranglers seem more like that than punk rock.

I'm also not a huge fan of The Damned but I like their debut album. Definitely a lot more than its opposition in this battle.

The Damned: 1
The Stranglers: 0

I think thats a fair explanation on the Stranglers. I often feel that way about many bands considered part of the genre. They just don't hit heavy enough for me to choose them over The Damned's debut. My ex girlfriend used to listen to that Damned album on repeat while she took a bath and did her hair up and I always thought it was a very well put together album. Production was solid and the choice of the way the songs lined up was just perfect. I haven't listened to either album in years but I would always consider that Damned album if I wanted a change.

The Damned: 2
The Stranglers: 0

I also agree with Engine. I think by todays standards a lot of the initial punk bands like The Stranglers, Siouxie & the Banshees, the Jam ect, are considered to be more alternative rock acts. The Stranglers defiantly didn't have the same aggression as the Pistols, UK Subs, ect.

To be honest I was just going to sit this one out, but Engine hit the nail on the head, so...

The Damned 3
Stranglers 0

Yeah, the genre issue always comes up when talking about The Stranglers, I like to think you can get away with putting their first album in the punk mix though, although the synth does seem to scare people away..My ex girlfriend's Dad goes to see Cornwell constantly and I've been to see The Stranglers 3/4 times, the impression I get from the "hardcore" fans is that they regarded themselves as punks at the time so I just tend to go along with that.

Still, forget all that, go purely on the music

I love the Stranglers. Although the Damned is also great and sort of the epitome of punk rock, the Stranglers get my vote!

The Damned 3
The Stranglers 1
