I'm not going to be able to number them, only picking these albums was difficult enough. I chose the albums that I felt grabbed my attention quickest.

The Replacements - Sorry Ma! Forgot To Take Out The Trash!
Bad Religion - Against The Grain
The Clash - Sandinista!
Television - Marquee Moon
NOFX - So Long And Thanks For All The Shoes
Pennywise - Pennywise
Husker Du - Zen Arcade
Ramones - Ramones
The Dead Boys - Young, Loud & Snotty
The Offspring - Smash

There is a disturbing lack of Negative Approach in this thread.

Shape Of Punk to Come is definitely one of the best in the genre. Songs to Fan the Flames of Discontent is very good as well.

I love that you both have Marquee Moon on there.
Awesome album.

My friend gave me a flash drive with a bunch of stuff I regularly listen to and that was on it. I sadly deleted the files from that album to make room for my stuff to give back, and have yet to listen. I apoligize for missing out on the experience. I'll probably stumble over it when I find time to get into more post-punk.

I believe you can find a full album upload on YouTube if you're interested in going that direction. Granted sometimes listening to albums on YT can be a bit annoying.

Anyway, its definitely worth the time to check out.

JGuy Grungeman 10-20-2015 08:11 PM

OH CRAP. I forgot my real 1. Unknowm pleasures

DeadChannel 10-20-2015 09:31 PM

2) Crass - Pens Envy
3) Nomeamsno - Sex Mad
4) Bad Brains - s/the
5) Nomeamsno - Wrong
6) Minor Threat - Complete Discography
7) Crass - Feeding of the 5000
8) Propagahndi - How to Clean Everything

I don't agree with 10 being Dead Kennedy's, that record should be at least 5. But all those albums are serious punk starting kits.

DeadChannel 10-21-2015 08:00 AM

I just dig their second record a little bit more.

Propagandhi is the bee's knees. One of the coolest transitions I've ever seen a band make. Personally I think Potemkin City Limits is their best effort and one of the best post-hardcore/crossover thrash albums of all time.

JGuy Grungeman 10-26-2015 03:49 PM

Has anyone here mentioned Ramones?

Honestly, I never really like Ramones, as heritical as that sounds.

JGuy Grungeman 10-27-2015 01:42 PM

Overrated band. The albums after there debut were much better, and tolerable.

Death was the first true punk rock band, and wether they were well-known or not their influence rippled through the underground to create the first wave sound.

Ramones always seemed really arrogant and image-obsessed to me as well. If there's one thing I truly hate about punk it's the fashion stereotypes.

So who do you think was the original band?

"The Ostrich" by the Primitives came out in 1964. Not that it matters.

Haven't listened to their newest, but they definitely got better with age. Death to Tyrants from '06 is the one that rocks my **** the hardest. Love them right along with Madball as quality meathead NYHC.

The Batlord 11-01-2015 03:17 AM

****, I guess I should come up with my own list. I love me some punk, but I'm much more of a metal guy, so a lot of my favs would be on the metal side of punk. If nobody gives Marquee Moon a second thought, then I think old school metalcore should be up for grabs.

1. Arkangel - Dead Man Walking
2. Converge - Jane Doe
3. Magrudergrind - Magrudergrind
3. Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks, Here Are the Sex Pistols
4. Unbroken - Life.Love.Regret.
5. Dead Kennedys - Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death
6. Madball - Set It Off
7. Sick of It All - Death to Tyrants
8. Black Flag - Damaged
9. X-Ray Spex - Germfree Adolescents
10. Ramones - Ramones

Honorable Mention: Charles Bronson - Youth Attack

JGuy Grungeman 11-01-2015 10:04 AM

IMO, the term punk came in 1976, so Ramones was the first real punk band. Anything else was influence. I've listened to a lot of proto-punk, and to me its not the same.

Also, Marquee Moon's art punk, so it, like metalcore, counts.

Tristan_Geoff 11-01-2015 09:59 PM

Nope. It was more minimalistic. Resembled a skull and crossbones slightly, but I can't be sure. Rites of Spring is great however.

But the Ramones were also just one band in a tiny scene of very different bands with little to no recognition, until the Sex Pistols and the English punk scene brought attention, numbers, and a recognizable sound to the genre.

Whoever you want to say was the first punk band that sounded like a punk band, the Sex Pistols started punk.
