I'm starting come to the conclusion that art rock is a bul**** genre that is so loosely defined, that almost any band could be lumped in there if you want.

Art Rock is a special case tho, normally even if the defenition sucks ass you know there's a million bands with that sound. With Art Rock it could really be anything.

Btw, what the **** is Indie Rock even supposed to mean? I mean, name that applies to a ton of other bands as well aside, I've even seen the term used on bands that sound just like Punk Rock bands, yet also on bands that sound nothing like that at all.

Bands from independent labels, but overtime it's morphed into it's own sound that's pretty distinct. Don't tell me you haven't heard a certain band before and said "some indie band".

Art Rock is used for any artsy rock album that is not classified under any other genre. Experimental Rock and Art Rock are sort of interchangeable, however through differences in origin and critic perception some artists are more associated with one term than the other.

Also, @Pink Floyd

1. Piper, Saucerful, and More are definitely Psych Rock.
2. Ummagumma was their Experimental Rock album, which is often caught between Psych and Prog.
3. Atom Heart Mother and Meddle are some of their earliest prog albums.
4. Obscured by Clouds is a brief delve into Art Rock for the band.
5. DSoTM, WYWH, and Animals are all Pink Floyd trademark prog, they don't sound like *other* prog because no other prog band has managed to have a sound like them (though to be fair Porcupine Tree had all of the same elements as Pink Floyd, except they were heavier and are considered by everybody to be Progressive Rock.)
6. The Wall is a weird amalgamation that, to me at least, represents simply "70s Rock".
7. I don't know how to identify The Final Cut besides that it literally sounds like a musical.
8. MLoR is basic Pop Rock with some of their old sound thrown in, Division Bell is a step back towards their older stuff, but is still pretty poppy. Every Floyd fan seems to have a favorite off of that album though. In general, Division Bell just feels ten years too late to me (Poles Apart rocks though).
9. Endless River is an ambient album. And is really bad.
BONUS: Their live albums are pretty sweet. You should check out Pulse sometime.

So final consensus, they are definitely Art Rock, their early material can be considered Psych, and while they have some elements which set them apart from most prog bands, their material is certainly proggy enough to consider them prog without being laughed at.

SUGGEST ME AN ALBUM - I'm probably not going to listen to it but I will if you bother me enough.

Indie Rock is a really hard genre to describe in terms of any apparent sound (although that's not going to stop me).

Imagine if one of the big four of thrash was a hardcore punk band.
