This made me chuckle in agreement, though, I do like a song or two from them. Overall, though, yes, microwaved diarrhea.

to me, they've always felt more Alternative Rock than Punk.

Well, they sound quite a bit like The Ramones, so I reckon they're at least a little bit punk.

I think whatever reason you could give for not calling them punk would probably apply equally to bands everyone would consider punk. Whether it's tuneful vocals (Ramones), skilled musicianship (Dead Kennedys), poppy song structure (most punk I've heard), good production values (Sex Pistols), being on a major label (again...) it's nothing new.

Plus, if everyone stuck rigidly to the confines of real punk we would just be writing Damaged over and over again, which would be really lame. I think worrying about what stylistic rules you're allowed to break is the least punk thing you could do.

Green Day play simple, energetic rock and roll. They've got progressively more mainstream sounding but the core of their sound is punk.

Nah the only thing punk about late Green Day is Billy Jack Offstrong's teenagery vocal inflections.
