TrampInaTux 01-24-2006 01:25 PM

This is the biggest news I've heard all year! (Considering this year has been a month so far, you might not think that is interesting. But some interesting stuff has happened this month.)

KineticBeats 01-24-2006 02:15 PM

yeah it isnt anything new

Yeah I don't understand why he would make this move at this point in his career (besides $$$). But, his next release can't be any worse than Street Disciple.

Ante_Up 01-25-2006 11:39 PM

cats better start checkin there ears....Streets Disciple IMO is extremly underrated...maybe ahead of its time...hopfully in 5 years, it gets the recognition it deserves

hifive 01-27-2006 12:48 PM

WTF. When I heard this news, I almost cried. Why leave Sony? How is it better to be UNDER Jay-Z?!

Ante_Up 01-27-2006 01:05 PM

^^Bigger Album budget, more money for marketing, bigger hip hop artist roster for collabs, more in house producers, and i dont know for sure but maybe he was offered more money per album he does?

DarkManX 04-21-2007 07:06 AM

Nas-"Hip Hop is Dead" - is it any good?

HHID is nothing to shout about. It's alright. There were way better rap albums than that out last year. Hell, even Streets Disciple and Stillmatic weren't particularly good. If you're looking for Nas' better works (other than his obvious best, Illmatic), then look no further than God;s Son (2004) and even his sophomore effort It Was Written (1996). I can only imagine that if you like his mediocre stuff so much, you'll love his good stuff.

rasta-craze 04-22-2007 08:16 PM

i dont listen to much rap, but hip hop is dead is proably one of the best rap cd's i have heard in a whyle, sence well it died.

who killed it is the best track in my opinion on that cd

Kimbab84 04-26-2007 09:00 AM

I have all the Nas album and when comparing to his early works..Hip Hop Is dead is kinda of a letdown...maybe I was too excited but it did not live up to the hype...Ah well it still is one of the better albums that were released in 2006-present. Illmatic is the SH*T though!!!

Poseidon72 04-29-2007 01:20 PM

I think Hip Hop is dead has some great tracks but not enough to call it a great album. About 3 or 4, I would listen thru it.

Canis Da Beast 05-06-2007 05:23 AM

Yeah, i think it is a real nice album..Let there be light/carry on tradition/not going back/who killed it/blunt ashes are all really good tracks..

.V. 05-06-2007 01:55 PM

well if u dont have Illmatic yet, you need that album, thats his best work. hip hop is dead is decent, but not something that youll play verry often.
Illmatic and even stillmatic are ones that youll play over and over

nymyth 05-07-2007 11:26 AM

yeah its def. a good album, and if youre a nas fan then its def. worth getting...i dont think hell ever match illmatic...but that can be said about any great rappers first album.....its always hard to match the first

Peace

Trauma 05-07-2007 10:25 PM

I agree with the aforementioned.

Hip Hop Is Dead definitely isn't Nas' best, but it's a good album with some introspective lyrics and good flow.
Although the beats are mildly generic, it doesn't really detract from the lyrics (as in most Hip Hop).

Some favourites off the album:
Money Over Bullshit
Hip Hop Is Dead
Black Republican

The appearances by Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg aren't the best.

.V. 05-08-2007 03:51 PM

im going to go out on a limb here....jay z is wack. he should have stayed retired. and snoop dogg couldnt get more washed up. i respect their old stuff, but c'mon man, theyre like fifty years old now ;/

Trauma 05-08-2007 03:52 PM

^
Seriously.

ryder 05-29-2007 04:45 AM

Nas HHID i liked. not his best but i like it. Stillmatic IMO is the best. I think Illmatic is somewhat overrated even though i like that also. Jay-Z'a Kingdom come was a let down. should of been gone longer or put better work on it. its got some good tracks but disappointing.

"Kingdom Come" was pretty bad, but I wouldn't say that it makes Jay wack. "The Black Album" was so incredible because it was the album that he always wanted to make but couldn't because of commercial demand. With KC being his big re-entrance back into hip hop, he had to get back on his pop music grind. I don't like to say that one album makes an artist wack, because that's disregarding his entire catalog before it and whatever new music he might make in the future.

As for "Hip Hop Is Dead," I really enjoyed it. The album was generally well-received by NaS fans and included some great cuts, including Can't Forget About You, Carry On Tradition, Still Dreaming, Hip Hop Is Dead, Hustlers, and Black Republican. There are some weak tracks, but nothing that I would say is wack.

And be sure to cop "Illmatic." It's a classic!

it was IMO.

I'm not a big fan of NAS, so I'm chancing this post on the thread.

NAS has some great well written lyrics in "Hip-Hop is Dead," but I miss some of the music he created in the 90s.

ADayInTheLife 06-07-2007 07:44 PM

Hip Hop Is Dead has some good songs on it. Overall it is ok, but you need to get Illmatic now it is one of if not the best Hip Hop albums ever.

beanbryant24 06-14-2007 08:11 AM

this **** old as hell

it's aight sike nah it s ass i'll give it a 3.0

Piss Me Off 06-27-2007 05:13 AM

Hip Hop is Dead is average really.
**** best hip-hop album ever, Illmatic is one of the best albums ever period.

WUDJ 07-02-2007 05:03 AM

very nice album one of the Nas greatest albums

Highway Penguin 01-12-2008 12:55 AM

Nas

Hello, I did a search, but was unable to find any thread on him already, so I apologize in advance if there is one.

Anyways, I just bought his Illmatic cd, slightly late I know, but I want to know which one I should pick up next? I was thinking God's Son or It Was Written....?

Thanks.

sleepy jack 01-12-2008 01:02 AM

After Illmatic it was more about good songs not so much good albums. I guess I'd go with I Am that's the only other one I thought was decent as an album. God's Son was okay too. I've heard positive things about Stillmatic.

Highway Penguin 01-12-2008 01:41 AM

Thanks for the the thread bro. :)

And for the two cents.

pheurton 01-12-2008 03:47 AM

I love god's son, I prefer it to illmatic.

SammyJay 07-09-2008 07:49 PM

Nas-Illmatic

I stand this album up against Ready To Die any day. In fact I dare say it's better than Ready To Die. Nas has some of the most poetic rap lyrics I've ever heard. Every song is a classic.

15Steps 07-11-2008 11:01 PM

woah, hold on buddy.
illmatic was great, like an 8.8/10, but it isnt one of the best albums ever.

i can think of many better rap and hiphop albums:

Deltron 3030 - s/t
Madvillainy - s/t
Public Enemy - millions
Aesop Rock - Labor Days
Outkast - Stankonia

I'd say it is, and especially one of the best rap albums. It's an album with no filler, no skits, it doesn't outstay it's welcome (its really refreshing to hear a rap album that isn't an hour long), has my favourite Hip-hop track (The World Is Yours), some really great sampling, and at that point all of the big talk was completely backed up. It's quite a crossover album as well, appeals to all sorts of music fans. It gets big love from me.
