Your Top 10 Favourite Hip Hop Producers?

I know there's already a thread commenting on a top 50 list of hip hop producers in which the issue is discussed, but most of the topic is based on discussing the list provided, so I thought we could talk production here. Feel free to base your list on whatever you feel, who has influenced production most, or just personal preference. I'm personally going for my favourites, producers who make the music which I listen to. Anyway, there's no particular order.

J Dilla
Pete Rock
RZA
Hi-Tek
Madlib
Q-Tip
Eric B
9th Wonder
MF Doom
DJ Premier

I feel bad leaving Dre out, his beats are huge and you can identify a Dre beat a mile off, but I hardly ever listen to the majority of West coast artists he produces for so I had to leave him out. I'd love to include some more recent and up and coming producers like Black Milk, Nujabes, Nomak, Jake One, Nottz amongst many others, but I guess they'll have their part to play in the future and would probably make the list if I was to extend it to 20.

I've probably forgotten some, I've kind of rushed this. Anyway, make your personal lists and hell, let's seize the opportunity and post some of our favourite beats by our favourite producers. I'll hunt down some of my favourite beats by the producers on my list asap. Enjoy!

:)

It seems you have forgotten Dan the Automater. Seems logical if you like all them.

simplephysics 08-13-2009 09:06 PM

Our top 10 are rather similar, but a few artists will make everyone's list I'm sure. No specific order, it was hard enough trying to narrow it down to 10.

J Dilla
El-P
Hi-Tek
Madlib
Dangermouse
Odd Nosdam
9th Wonder
Dan The Automator
DJ Premier

Anything solo-wise you recommend? I've obviously heard his work with Deltron, Del and The Gorillaz, and I know a few album she's produce don too but has he done anything else worth trying out? Like just an album of beats/instrumentals a la Blockhead/Madlib/Dilla or someone.

Hey, since everyone in this thread seems to think very highly of J Dilla and since I own nothing by him, what would you folks recommend I check out?

I'd say the obvious starter would be Donuts, as a whole album of his material and style. I posted a playlist I have of my favourite Dilla beats, whether they be solely the beat, or something he has produced for someone else such as The Pharcyde or Common. You could always check out any tracks from that list too.

Then anything you choose really! Let us know how you get on.

Kudos on Hi-Tek. Oh and congratulations on guessing I liked a producer 80% of people would put on their list from me saying I didn't like Timberland. ;)

Vintage.

His best imo.

But what I think you should do is start from Slum Village and work your way on up. I think it's best to follow his work...and then you get to hear what tip he was on by the time he died.

For me

Madlib
Marley Marl
Premo
Pete Rock
RZA
Diamond D
Havoc
DJ Quik
Hi-Tek
Jneiro Janel

in no particular order

yeah he has his hands in a lot of bay area **** but I'm a Lurch fan so naturally I don't like him.

when he was working with Big lurch in cosmic slop shop he wouldn't do anything for Lurch's solo stuff on the album unless it included him or Doonie Baby in it, their way of manipulating him into working with them more

melindash 09-26-2009 02:36 PM

poor eminem.

Bane of your existence 10-01-2009 04:45 PM

I'm suprised Eric B got two votes for top 10. I feel like Rakim totally carried that dude.

Kirby 10-01-2009 08:50 PM

My vote for him was based on his work with Rakim.
I'm probably changing up my list, soon.

5. Danger Mouse? I don't know if he counts...

That about sums it all up.

simplephysics 11-22-2009 10:26 AM

I don't see why Dangermouse wouldn't make the cut, he's pretty involved when it comes to producing in hip hop.. Dangerdoom, The Grey Album, Demon Days.. etc. Not to mention some of the stuff he's done outside the genre.

LoathsomePete 11-22-2009 10:31 AM

I was pretty surprised to see him listed as producer for Attack & Release by The Black Keys.

Hah, that was actually what I had in mind.
I know some people were disappointed with Attack & Release, but I really like the direction he took it in. Bit of a stretch for the band but I think it still turned out to be a pretty decent album.
