Illmatic - Nas
Any Big L, take your pick, best rapper ever.
Gangstarr - Hard to earn
Atmosphere - When life gives you lemons, paint that **** gold.
Wu-Tang - 36 Chambers.

That should give you a good variety, if your looking for some underground/more of a coastal rap.

XV - The complex (Get the mixtape, really good)
Kid CuDi - Man on the moon
Artist Spotlight - Reebok Album 1 (Alot of Lupe)

Artists to listen to. (More unknown, i can give you more)
Slug
Wale
XV
Dl Incognito

I used to have over 15k underground songs on my other laptop, but i had to wipe it and didnt get my external HDD yet so there all gone

I started out listening to nerdcore hip-hop, but my first real hip-hop album is No Need for Alarm, by Del Tha Funkee Homosapien. Other than that, I'd say this thread has some awesome recommendations.

I think as long as you listen and know who Tupac, Notorius BIG, Jay Z, and Nas, are... you are well on your way.

Although now hip hop music has changed a bit so there are other new rap artist such as Drake.

Lil Wayne is not new but he has blew up in the past couple of years so you definently need to know who he is.

Also, MTV posted the top 10 rappers of 2009. That list will help.

A website called Rate Your Music will help. You can type in a decade or year and it will give you a list of artist and songs posted by people. (Such as 90's HipHop).

Good Luck... You've entered the darkside!
