It's also worth noting that the album is free.

Goofle 06-19-2012 10:38 AM

Hearing good things about it. Shall be downloading it soon.

Does Joey Bada$$ have his own thread yet?

Don't know if this has been posted anywhere, but I thought it might be worth it for many of you peeps here on MB.

So I've been loving Freestyle Fellowship, Boom Bip and Doseone, dalek, and Death Grips lately. What other hip hop or rap artists should I delve into? I've definitely developed an appreciation for the genre and would like to further it with some artists similar to these.

Goofle 06-24-2012 11:37 AM

Glad you liked that Boom Bip & Doseone album. One of my all-time favourites.

anticipation 06-24-2012 03:24 PM

gettin' loot and living right,
that's all that's in the game plan.

Thought this was a good remix tape. Free DL. Really digging the Das EFX and Elzhi tracks in particular.

OCD: Moosh & Twist

G-Eazy

D-Why

Cam Meekins

I know it's a ton of white rappers but they're all talented as ****.

Since you're done with Dose One, you need more. Themselves is my favorite of his. Their album Them is a great start. Their free mixtape TheFREEHoudini was pretty tight. Get everything Themselves related that you can.

As far as falling for Freestyle Fellowship, excellent. Make sure you got their 2011 album the Promise, and then backtrack and pick up any and all of the individual members' albums. Myka 9 is my favorite in the group. He used to release albums under Mikah 9 so check wikipedia or somewhere to see which albums are under which name. But Timetable is amazing. 1969 is very fun. Mykology is very good (that came out 2011 also). And there are a good few I can't find online, but youtube y'know.

Then Aceyalone has great albums as well. All Balls Don't Bounce, A Book of Human Language, Accepted Eclectic, Magnificent City ** (f. RJD2), Grand Imperial.

Then you need to get Haiku D'Etat, with Myka 9, Acey, and friend Abstract Rude. Just get those albums and you are set for a nice long while with some really solid albums.

Thanks for the tips, I'll definitely be checking all of those out asap.

Goofle 07-05-2012 07:04 PM

Also check out Slave Riot by Young Jazz Rebels. Very cool left-field Hip Hop that's jazzy.

And if you already haven't, listen to Aesop Rock's Labour Days and Madvillainy by Madvillain (or any MF DOOM related project).

Rjinn 07-05-2012 08:32 PM

Not really much into rap but there's a few I'm partial on:

Beastie Boys
Public Enemy
Cypress Hill
The Roots

De La Soul and Fugees are ok too.

Mrd00d 07-07-2012 01:21 PM

@Frownland, I forgot to mention with the Dose One stuff ... his project 13 & God is pretty dang good. Their latest album came out in 2011. I like the old and new alike, so whatevers clever.

Frownland 07-07-2012 01:56 PM

Thanks Mrdood, I'll definitely check that out along with the rest of his stuff that I can find. And Goofle, I checked out that Aesop Rock album at work yesterday and really dug it, thanks for the rec.

Mrd00d 07-07-2012 02:24 PM

Labor Days is my #1 pick for Aesop also. It's in my top 3 albums of all time.

Sparky 07-07-2012 02:42 PM

geesh louis bro top 3?

it's a nice concept album but i don't even regard it as his best work, not by a lot.

For me it goes
Float
Bazooka Tooth
none shall pass
labor days

Goofle 07-07-2012 02:45 PM

Come off it Sparky bro... My favourite Hip Hop album, closely followed by "Liquid Swords".

Glad you liked it Frown, real grower as well considering how complex his lyrics are.

Sparky 07-07-2012 03:03 PM

this is my number 1 i don't care how obvious it is

Seriously? Float is your top album from him? I've always regarded that as one of those quintessential "before he found his voice" kinds of albums.

Sparky 07-07-2012 03:10 PM

to me it sounds like he has more of a voice

I fear his next release is going to be his blandest yet, signing with rhymesayers will do that.

his verse starts at like 1:08 and its real dense and angsty and anti-establishment which is why its nice to me

Goofle 07-07-2012 03:15 PM

Madvillainy is a perfectly fine choice. Third for me.

From what I have heard it is dope as feck. Believe.

Hmm... Patti Smith has a new song out called Amerigo. Popular all of a sudden...

I think its mad to say Bazooka Tooth and None Shall Pass are anywhere but the bottom two. I'd rather listen to Appleseed than None Shall Pass.

1. Labor Days
2. Music For Earthworms
3. Float
4. Bazooka Tooth
5. Appleseed
6. None Shall Pass
7. Fast Cars, Danger, Fire, and Knives

and I think Skelethon will probably start at number 3 and either go down to 4, or up to 2.

In order of amount of tracks listened to per album, though:

Bazooka Tooth (509)
Labor Days (504)
Appleseed (411)
None Shall Pass (383)
Music For Earthworms (368)
Unreleased Comps./Singles (300)
Float (236)
Fast Cars (171)

For Death Grips fans, see if you like this. It's small time, but that's the great thing about the way things are evolving.

Sparky 07-08-2012 01:05 PM

what were your favorite bazooka tooth tracks?

I love Float, Bazooka Tooth (which for some silly reason people don't seem to even like), and None Shall Pass, but Labor Days is probably the best. Its definitely at least as good as the other 3. And as for 'concept album' - did you read that on wikipedia? I think I missed the concept.

I always felt that Bazooka Tooth is at least as conceptual - the concept being the life of a nerdy kid with with bad teeth who grew up in Brooklyn back when white people generally didn't live there. I could be totally wrong about that of course. Except for the bad teeth part.

Sparky 07-08-2012 01:47 PM

I just always assumed it was a concept album about the rigor and lifelessness of typical working conditions. It melds with some ethereal aesop rock-y perceptions of life but i thought it was all still glued together by the notion that working sucks.

I don't remember the last time i listened to the record but i listened to it a lot.

I like bazooka tooth and agree with your interpretation. It seems more like float. Aesop isn't comfortable, he's stuck in a a society, specifically NY, where babies have guns and cling on to outdated hip hop symbolism, as well as some typical big brother future dystopian stuff. Aesop consumes a lot of psychedelics and tries to balance his "care free"adolescent life with the looming knowledge that its going to not exist very soon.
