The Rap & Hip-Hop Recommendation Thread
I'm trying to find more bands like these that actually have a meaning, nothing about cars and girls and new commercialized stuff. Any ideas are welcome. Thanks

I'm just gonna ignore the "not about cars and bling" comment cause i've heard it a million times now and its BS.

I realize what I'm about to say has nothing to do with the actual OP but I wasn't aware that you had this kind of HipHop under your belt and I need you to let me know how much of this you have and how much ass I have to kiss to get it. |
thanks for the suggestions. Sorry, first post, so if there are any threads already like this feel free to point me to them.

Definitely check out Digable planets like previously stated, Reachin' is a good start.
Some of Cypress Hill's stuff is kind of similar to De La Soul. ask here next time: http://www.musicbanter.com/rap-hip-h...on-thread.html |
|
Israeli band Hadag Nahash has some similarity to ATCQ.

Kenichiro Nishihara does a lot of piano jazz stuff with hip hop collaborators to make some awesome songs. His 2008 debut Humming Jazz was brilliant: Nujabes (RIP) is another stop you HAVE to make if you're interested in hip hop blended with jazz. Jun Seba was unfortunately involved in a fatal car crash earlier this year which was a major blow to the genre, but I've heard that his latest album will be released postmortem so we'll at least get a chance to hear what he was working on. Here is one his more popular songs as an example: Following the trend of Japanese artists is Cradle Orchestra whom I found last year. They are very light and easy to get into, which is absolutely perfect for this genre. They're probably my least favorite out of the three (Nujabes and Kenichiro Nishihara), but if you're looking for jazzy styled hip hop then they are definitely worth a look. Jazz Addixx is another band that fuses the live band elements of a jazz group with DJ's and MC's. Their jazzy style isn't as prominent as with Artofficial, at least not in the horn section, but they are still very much part of this genre and are one of my favorite groups from it. Lastly is Animate Objects who are a rising band, winning a few awards with their 2007 debut Ridin' In Fast Cars With Your Momma. They were the first jazz hip hop band I actually was sent way back in '08 and I have been spinning it ever since. The album isn't as wild as some of the other groups, but it is sincere and fun to listen to. |
Where do I start with Talib Kweli? Which of his albums is most digestible/accessible?
|
I think you have to start early with "Quality" and his collab effort in Black Star.
|
Definitely Black Star first. That album is one of my favourite.
|
I've been thinking about producing some more hip-hop, but this time with slow, grungy IDM beats and Dubstep style basses and atmos and with Aesop-Rock type lyrics... just something odd I've been tossing around for the past few days. I'm not sure if there's something like that out there already, but if any of you know any artists already putting that kind of thing out, I'd like to put some ear on that.

Benga has the type of beats you are after but Kode 9 may be more suited. It may not be perfect as the vocals are very lazy, almost drawl like. However the beats might give you some pointers.
Benga: Kode 9: You could also try the artists The Bug and Milanese. |
Thanks! Yea the Benga track is sort of what I'm thinking in terms of the atmosphere, but the beats themselves would be a bit more hardcore. Around the same BPM, but twisted up, a little distorted, compressed and punchy.
Probably more like what I usually produce for beats, but suited for flowing to. Ultimately I'm thinking of a mix of styles.. IDM/Dubstep/Electronica/Grunge/HipHop and even a little Indie thrown in there. All crammed into each song differently over the course of an album. I want to write a full album, as all I've ever done is single releases of various genres since 2004 and it sucks not to have something coherent as a single entity after all that time. I really want to have an idea worked out before I go into it, so that's what the recommendation is for really. I'll check out the other two artists as well. If you or anyone else has anything to add that might give me some inspiration or ideas to take note of, let 'em rip. Thanks! :D |
Going for an aesop rock type flow might be kinda tricky. But then again I don't know your music that well. You could spit hot fire.

thanks for all of the responses. Anything a little more Eminem - ish (more gritty, a little more diverse beat) than ATCQ and the rest?
|
not sure if this isn't getting some love because its stuck at top^^
