So I was at a media store last week looking through when all of a sudden I found a genre called Skip Hop. WTF is Skip Hop!?

Then I found this.

Quote:

(n) A subset of Hip-Hop produced by Australian musicians, otherwise known as skips.

Skip-Hop is rapped in a broad Australian accent, usually with references to iconic items or activities, such as fish'n'chips, Coopers Beer, hanging out in Frankston, or the didgeridoo.

Skip-Hop usually draws heavily on sampling, and is famous for its clean and bouncy beats.

Skip-Hop does NOT encompass Hip-Hop rapped by Australians in American accents. This is referred to as lame and traitorous.

14232949 09-30-2012 09:27 AM

Do you have any examples of artists we should check out?
It sounds odd enough to be interesting.

Goofle 09-30-2012 09:34 AM

Just sounds like Australians who happen to be making Hip Hop from that description.

14232949 09-30-2012 09:36 AM

On second thoughts, it sounds like a lame parody.

Rjinn 09-30-2012 10:32 AM

That's the thing, Australian hip hop was just that, not some new name patriotic label. Nor have I ever heard of a requirement "Australian accents only." Most artists here are influenced by American hip hop. I'm still looking for artists online but I can't seem to find any fitting the requirement. Some consider Hilltop Hoods skip hop but they don't rap about beer and food or have a distinctive Australian accent. I used to know a group of boys around my area and they did have a pungent Aussie accent that rapped about vandalism mostly. There was no such genre appearing in stores until recently.

1200 Techniques are pretty good Australian hip hop group btw.

I'll have to go through artists in stores and get back to you.

This movie soundtrack and Beat Streets movie soundtrack should be close stuff to Egyptian Lover. Makes me wanna bust out some cardboard and do some egg rolls or windmills.

Myka 9 & Factor - Bask In These Rays feat. Astronautalis & Ceschi by Fake Four, Inc. on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free

A nice track from Myka 9 & Factor with Ceschi and Astronautalis from the Fake Four Inc. label. Really nice smooth funky beat

Mrd00d 11-12-2012 12:43 PM

Woah Pete that's ****in great. Love hearing new Myka 9!!

LoathsomePete 11-12-2012 05:34 PM

I was actually drawn to the track by Astronautalis and Ceschi being on the track, but I definitely need to familiarize myself with Myka 9. You seem to have more authority on the situation than I do, do you have any starting points?

Also shameless plug for both Ceschi and Astronautlis

Nice, glad you liked! I don't think that album will disappoint. He's got Emancipator doing a couple beats, plus he's an enormously talented producer in his own right.

Janszoon 11-28-2012 03:58 PM

Anyone have any recommendations for some experimental hip hop? I don't mean experimental as in "that guy sometimes raps about sort of odd things", I mean experimental music along the lines of K-the-I??? or Dälek or Shabazz Palaces' weirder moments.

Anyone? :)

14232949 11-28-2012 04:11 PM

According to your Last FM, you somehow managed to miss The Money Store by Death Grips. You NEED that record.
Their newer album NOLOVEDEEPWEB is always well worth the listen.

If you just want the beats, check out Prefuse 73 and check out Jel (J.
Bike For Three! or Buck 65 might fit that criteria.

I already have The Money Store actually, it must be one of the many things that apparently haven't gotten scrobbled when I listened to them. Decent album though for sure.

I'm familiar with all of those already except for the Russian one. It sounds cool though. I'll definitely have to check that one out. Thanks!

LoathsomePete 11-28-2012 06:17 PM

I would definitely also recommend Buck 65, specifically his 2005 album Secret House Against the world
