Greatest Hip Hop Artist/Group Ever

List of Polls Done So Far:
http://www.musicbanter.com/thread-gr...nd-1-poll.html
http://www.musicbanter.com/thread-gr...-1-poll-b.html
http://www.musicbanter.com/thread-gr...-1-poll-c.html

http://www.musicbanter.com/rap-hip-h...-1-poll-e.html
http://www.musicbanter.com/rap-hip-h...-1-poll-f.html

I want to begin a series of polls on this. Everyone gets to nominate five artists, I'm going to start a list (of really obvious ones.)

Also we need to have a discussion on how certain artists should be organized...like should we go MF Doom and have that encompass everything he's done, or nominate individual projects, same goes for Del (should we just attribute Deltron 3030 to him alone?) And then there's the whole Wu-Tang Clan thing.

List of Really Obvious Ones:
Public Enemy
NWA
A Tribe Called Quest
Wu-Tang Clan
The Roots
De La Soul
2Pac
Nas
Notorious BIG
Run DMC
Jay-Z
Eric B. & Rakim
Outkast

? WUT DO WE DO HERE
Kool Keith
Ghostface Killah
MF Doom
Del Tha Funkee Homosapien
Dr. Dre

I'm kind of in a weird rambly mood sorry if I'm not making much sense with this. Ask questions!

My opinion on what we should do with the aforementioned problem (here on out referred to as "The Wu-Tang Crisis) is when the artist has a buttload of one-album (to two album) side projects, we should refer to them all under one blanket name, but when the artist just has like two major projects that are easily separable (such as Dr. Dre and NWA) we should separate them. I think that's what makes the most sense. What makes the most sense to you dudes?

Really? Greatest hip hop group ever?

you gotta justify this man!

Kirby 01-04-2011 08:58 PM

As I've said many times in other threads, I don't believe in a best/greatest ever.
I just believe in personal preferences.

I recently saw Doomtree do a show in Atlanta, and it was possibly the best show I've ever been too. Not to mention I haven't really heard any of them release material that has been bad. They work very well together as a group, and this is why I nominate them.

sleepy jack 01-04-2011 09:08 PM

Just so everyone knows, I'm closing nominations Saturday. Also everyone gets an extra five to nominate because I'm like the hip hop santa clause of democracy.

storymilo 01-04-2011 09:24 PM

Things that haven't been nominated...

CunninLynguists
WHY?
Beastie Boys
Blackalicious

Nominating Why? as a "greatest hip hop artist/group ever" is ridiculous. Sorry.

ThePhanastasio 01-05-2011 10:42 AM

5 mo?

Black Sheep
Del the Funkee Homosapien
Deep Puddle Dynamics
Aceyalone
Immortal Technique

sleepy jack 01-05-2011 03:29 PM

Yep five more.

Here's how it's going to work by the way because the last time I did this was probably 2-3 years ago, there's going to be five artists per each poll (maybe four depending on how many there is) and I'll throw all the names in a hat and pull out the number per poll and pin them against each other in a poll. I'll post 2-4 polls a week and let them stay open and the winners will go onto the next round. If it's a tie they'll be tiebreakers.

It's meant to be competitive. I almost nominated Why? myself. It'd be nice if this was more then just "A Tribe Called Quest Vs. Tupac Vs. Wu-Tang Vs. Nas Vs. Public Enemy."

djchameleon 01-05-2011 04:28 PM

Boot Camp Clik
Slaughterhouse
Nappy Roots
The Perceptionists
De La Soul
A Tribe Called Quest
Black Star
Geto Boys
The Fugees
Clipse

I just put down 10 since I didn't do the first five.

sleepy jack 01-05-2011 04:46 PM

I haven't been able to think of the Fugees without smiling since that Zach Galifianakis sketch.

Well, what the hell else can you really expect? When you call it a "greatest hip hop artist/group ever" thread, do you really think the obvious answers won't be brought up?

And, uh, you want a greatest of all-time polling thing (which is not an atypical thread idea at all, so you can't be annoyed with anticipating many answers), but you want people to nominate artists that CLEARLY are not eligible to be nominated for the position?

Why? is good, but the Why? project is hip hop influenced and only drifts further from it as time goes on. Yoni Wolf (which is maybe what he meant by Why?) is an incredible rapper, though. I just can't really fathom him as a consideration for "greatest hip hop artist ever." He's got the cLOUDDEAD self-titled album under his belt, and Ten is really good too, but he hasn't done enough to reach that status.

sleepy jack 01-06-2011 09:36 PM

I just think it'd keep things interesting if there was more then 2 rounds of polling because we only allowed sacred cows to compete. I'm sorry I feel this way. I'm pretty new to this making polls and forums thing in general. I'll contact you to for guidance next time I try something like this.

Maybe, but I enjoy them more than some of what's already been posted. also what sleepy jack said. What's the harm in nominating more acts?

Jester 01-07-2011 11:40 AM

I already said it's ridiculous. That's it. I'm not saying anyone's not allowed to nominate who they want, but certain nominations are clearly kind of pointless. That's the point I was making. What, you can nominate an artist, but I can't disagree with the nomination? Don't be ridiculous!

also, lol @ sleepy jack.

storymilo 01-07-2011 02:25 PM

In my opinion, nominating Why isn't pointless. I'll gladly vote for them over someone like Eminem. And maybe others will too. I guess that's the point of the poll.

Phantom Limb 01-08-2011 01:56 PM

How about
Pharoahe Monch
Mr. Lif
Lil Wayne
GZA
Clipse

anticipation 01-08-2011 02:16 PM

DJ Premier
D.I.T.C. (Diggin' In The Crates Crew)
9th Wonder
Justus League (Little Brother)
Nujabes

you're welcome.

sleepy jack 01-09-2011 02:51 PM

I'm actually going to close nominations Tuesday.

Dr.Seussicide 01-09-2011 02:57 PM

OFWGKTA lol

crash_override 01-10-2011 01:57 PM

I made this nomination in one of the many other 'Greatest Rapper/Artist/MC/whatever in hip-hop' threads a while back, but since this one actually counts, I'm just going to copy and paste it here. So sorry for the double post in advance, I'm a terrible person...

Also, to be clear, I'm nominating Rakim as a solo artist. Not as a member of Eric B. & Rakim.

So, like many other people, I consider greatness to be something earned over time. So I'm not going to give this nomination to anyone who has came out recently, or even within the last 5 years. The Nomination for best rapper ever is....

Rakim, AKA: God MC

http://live.drjays.com/wp-content/up...9/10/RAKIM.JPG

Rakim, formerly of the duo Eric B. & Rakim, has been serving up flow lessons since back in the old school. He is a major influence to any and every rapper who ever amounted to anything. Rakim's lyical stylings along with his smooth and direct delivery make for some of the best verses ever put on tape. Rakim found solo success after splitting with Eric B., upon the release of 'The 18th Letter' (1997), and the follow up 'The Master' (1999). Rakim's latest release, 'The Seventh Seal' was released in 2009. 'The Seventh Seal' marks the second return of the great God MC, showing that he still has what it takes to run with the best.

Overall, I think there are a handful of rappers that can match the raw skill and delivery of Rakim, and also a few that can match his influence on the genre of hip-hop as a whole. But there is no one that has done both for as long as Rakim has.

djchameleon 01-10-2011 02:20 PM

oh can't believe I forgot All City Chess Club and Child Rebel Solider

Jester 01-12-2011 08:35 AM

All City Chess Club for greatest hip hop group ever... Jesus.

sleepy jack 01-12-2011 08:50 PM

Hey guys, I got snow-stranded away from internet. I'm going to start organizing the tiers now, I'll probably post the first few polls on Sunday because not only did god take a dump on me, school did too.

Posty420 01-14-2011 12:28 AM

I was going to put a list down but I might as well just copy and past yours...lol. I cant believe some people think lil wayne is the best rapper. They have all lost their minds.

yeah after I posted it, I realized it was in the wrong thread....I thought this was the thread just about what hip hop groups you like not for greatest ever. I wasnt paying attention at the time :bonkhead:

Janszoon 01-14-2011 06:53 AM

I'm sure no one is going to vote for them in the end but I do think Run DMC, Afrika Bambaataa, Kurtis Blow, Slick Rick, KRS-One and Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five all at least deserve a mention in this thread for the level of their influence on hip hop in general.

sleepy jack 01-16-2011 03:37 PM

Okay so now that I've got everything sorted out, here's some info.

There will be 18 polls, spread over the next (approximately) 2.5 weeks, following that will have 6 polls of 3, which will occur over six days, and then we'll have two polls of 3 posted at the same time and then we'll have the final poll which will be a head to head battle of the two greatest acts ever. So, all in all, this should be wrapped up in a month or so. EXCITED? YEAH? YEAH?
