Well its true though, I have nothing against white rappers (I love Eminem) so long as they are authentic and not pretending to be something there not.

The same thing applies to black rappers, Soulja Boy is not someone who strikes me as having street cred, 50 Cent on the other hand is solid.

I just find it funny that people feel the need to draw an arbitrary line between hiphop lyrics and all other fantastic lyrics. Fantasy is fine for any other format, but when it comes gangster lyrics you better be real or it's not authentic lyricism.

Heh, tell that to all the Christian conservative types who have gotten up in arms about death metal over the years And how about black metal? Do you have to burn down churches and be a Satanist to make black metal or is it ok if you're just someone with a talent for making heavy, evil sounding music?

I don't see why music needs to be autobiographical. Ice Cube grew up in a two parent home with parents who had regular full time jobs and he studied architectural drafting. Does that mean he should never have picked up a mic?

Yes, enjoying music for its own sake, such a contrarian opinion on a music forum.

No idea. It doesn't show up on my phone.

Maybe watch it before posting your opinion?

When I watch it, I'll be sure to post a comment about it for your enjoyment.

Har! lol, yes that is very true,

but again (although some people will disagree) praising and worshipping a demonic entity is much like GTA; it is fantasy. The realm of the supernatural may very well exist, but as of yet there is no concrete scientific evidence to support it.

So yes, anyone can sing about Satanism if they want to, Christianity is a universal doctrine open to anyone lol.

If I grew up in Detroit on the other hand, and had friends that have put caps in people's head, well then that is a very real concrete environment. Your having to struggle in a tough environment to survive, and should have the street cred to rap about it.

Ice Cube grew up in South Central though, he rapped about what he saw happening around him, and when he went solo, his lyrics weren't predominantly gangster, he actually repudiated much of what he saw happening around him.

This Post Malone dude, is most likely rapping about a world he has only seen through the eyes of MTV.

Because we've got to keep in real DWV! We can't have the Pee Wee Herman's of the world running around pretending to be gangsters it would kill the genre!

Anyways, I'm not to concerned about the fate of gangster rap at this point, or any musical genre for that matter. As you know, I believe all musical genres rise and fall and have an expiry date on them, so I will let someone else argue my point.

Alright, I had a chance to watch it now. I thought it was kind of lame, not because it isn’t “real” enough but because it’s kind of a boring song. The video, likewise, was cheesy. I found his big, white high-tops amusing though. Made me think of Anthrax back in the day.

Burning churches isn’t a fantasy though, that’s something some actual black metal musicians did, along with killing people. And there are people out there who think black metal musicians are poseurs if they don’t engage in that kind of behavior or at least subscribe to a Satanic or racist ideology. I think most of us agree that’s dumb, that you can make good black metal without being a criminal or having some ridiculous ideology. I’m just saying it should be the same with gangsta rap.

All I’m saying is Ice Cube went to the same high school as Lisa Kudrow and Justine Bateman. I don’t think his section of South Central was all that rough. It doesn’t make me like his music any less though.
