personally i love it when less common instruments are incorporated into the main sound of a non-jazz band, such as the horns. I think my generation (well, my highschool specifically) has forgotten that music is a lot more than fast guitar and catchy lyrics (and streelight has it all!)

I agree, Veggie, that ska is pleasant because it traditionally uses brass instruments not typically found in popular music these days. Also, ska is usually infectiously upbeat music. Streetlight Manifesto's music shows both of these qualities well. I actually prefer ska songs that don't emphasize the brass section so much, maybe because modern ska songs that use a lot of brass sound *so* traditional to me. Now I'm wondering if there is a ska band that uses wind instruments instead of brass!

The sticky for this section has a good summary of how ska emerged in Jamaica through the meshing Jamaican music and U.S. music that Jamaicans heard more of when they were purchasing radios after WWII. The history of ska interests me, because it shows the links between social and technological changes and the emergence of music trends. You might like reading more about it, too!

I really ridiculously love Streetlight. Two of my best friends went to see them and I don't think I've ever been so jealous in my life.

I have seen Streetlight Manifesto live, and it is amazing, I pity all who have yet to witness the beauty. Everything about it is incredible, and I loved it so so soo much. As I love Streetlight, easily one of my alltime favorite bands. They deserve so much credit for all of the everything they put into everything. Gah, there just incredible. Streetlight is phenominal, long story short. Anybody have that 99 songs of the revolution? Is it any good?

Everything goes numb, and Keasby nights are my favorite albums. I do quite enjoy "We Will Fall Together" from Somewhere in the Between though. First song of their's that I ever heard. I didn't catch them at warped tour 08' =( made me so sad, I got the time wrong. My friend Josh has seen them before and told me it's the best show he's ever seen BY FAR. I'm so jealous.

they're pretty ace, love the song 'keasbey nights' i think they do it better than the original, whose artist slips my mind...

Catch 22 & Streetlight Manifesto made some of my most favourite songs to listen to. I love their energy and their catchiness and above all, their lyrics. I got to see Streetlight in 2009 and I literally was so pumped for weeks after. It was a great, considering it was the dead of winter.. I love when a great show makes you feel so uplifted. They played so fast and did so many songs with so many variations it was unbelievable. My favourite songs would be Forty Days, Keasbey Nights, A Moment of Silence

The band their guys diverged out of is slightly more fathomable, but ultimately they're just a weak band. Nothing interesting going on in the brass, when their guitars attempt distortion it sounds awful, and semi-great/semi-terrible lyrics... Though I will admit the bassist is usually on point, and "A Better Place, A Better Time" is a good song. I love when people call what they do even remotely 'punk' - this spits in nobody's face, changes virtually no opinions whatsoever, and has never once made me think about anything. EVER.

They're better than bands like Reel Big Fish, though.
