Isis are pretty damn good in the low-end spectrum. More accessible than Boris etc. too.

Not saying that Boris, Khanate et al aren't great though.

imdesigner 10-04-2007 07:44 AM

kyuss is amazing! i wonder what their music would have been like now if they didnt split.

im gonna have to go with:
thumb
green machine
hurricane
catamaran
one inch man
supa scoopa and mighty scoop
gardenia
space ship landing (listening to that now, 10 minutes into it)

Maddest_Hatter 10-05-2007 10:28 AM

Man this is tough, I love ALL there music... I guess I would have to say Sky Valley, I can just sit and listen to the whole thing beginning to end!

almauro 10-05-2007 01:04 PM

If you love rock music you gotta own, Blues for the Red Sun. Sky Valley is great, but the 2nd suite runs too long and is repetitive, forshadowing their rapid decline in their final recording, And the Circus Leaves Town, which absolutely stinks. Alot of people dump on Wretched. Yes it's a poor recording and very thrashy, but it's alot more entertaining and energetic than Circus.

Are you for serious? Second suite is by far the best one on Sky Valley... Space Cadet and Demon Cleaner are so the best songs on that album.

anticipation 10-05-2007 03:27 PM

I was raised on Blues For The Red Sun & Fu Manchu's "The Action Is Go"

Actually, I was specifically thinking of Space Cadet. I don't understand how you can say it's far better than Odyssey/Conan/Troutman/N.O./Whitewater, probably the best think they ever did.

cardboard adolescent 10-05-2007 03:52 PM

Man, I love Space Cadet.

Inuzuka Skysword 10-05-2007 04:17 PM

Blues for the Red Sun is one of the greatest albums.

What!? And the Circus Leaves Town is amazing! Have you listened to Spaceship Landing?

almauro 10-06-2007 03:53 PM

Only dig 2 tunes off of Circus, "One Inch Man" and "Jumbo Blimp Jumbo". "Spaceship Landing" is a forced attempt to capture the magic of Sky Valley and doesn't sound as spontaneous as their best jams.

Urban Hat€monger ? 10-06-2007 04:11 PM

Don't think i've ever seen anybody mention this on the forum before & I knew nothing about it so i'll post this for anyone who wants it.

Kyuss/Queens of the Stone Age is a split EP which was released in December 1997. The first three songs are performed by Kyuss and the last three songs by guitarist Josh Homme's next band, Queens of the Stone Age. It includes a cover of the song "Into the Void" by Black Sabbath from their album Master of Reality. "If Only Everything" is an early version of the song "If Only", which appeared on Queens of the Stone Age's eponymous debut album. A re-recorded version of "Born to Hula" appeared as a b-side on one edition of the "Lost Art of Keeping a Secret" single release, and later as a track on the Stone Age Complications EP

Interesting. These split recordings seem to be a Stoner phenom. I think Boris just did one with Sun O))).

Merkaba 12-08-2007 01:59 AM

I've been digging my Kyuss lately. This is from an awesome series of vids at the '95 Bizarre festival, and I also found a video of them doing Whitewater in the desert on Youtube. It's awesome to think about that event itself but I wish the quality was just that little bit better. Bloody desert winds!

Seltzer 12-08-2007 05:06 AM

Best band evar. Scott Reeder is insanely underrated as a bassist.

Gates_of_Iscariot 12-08-2007 06:57 PM

Kyuss is amazing, i particularly like ...and the circus. Great stoner, with bass riffs.

O'Bannion 12-11-2007 02:07 AM

I downloaded a torrent with all their albums and listened to one of them and hated it. I guess I expected more after hearing how great they were. Took a break from them for a couple of days. Then listened to the rest of the albums and was blown away. It's like Queens except heavier (if that's possible).

Mojo 01-10-2009 02:34 PM

Welcome To Sky Valley is their best record for me. I havent heard a KYUSS record I don't like but that one sounds so much trippier, so much heavier and leans more towards the doom end of the spectrum which suits me down to the ground.

Im glad the QOTSA split was mentioned as well, thats what I'm listening to right now and its amazing.

lucifer_sam 01-10-2009 02:39 PM

I'm not really sure why they recorded Into the Void. It's a Sabbath classic and Homme has stated repeatedly that he never listened to Sabbath. Maybe John Garcia or Scott Reeder wanted it in, I dunno.

mr dave 01-10-2009 04:09 PM

i heard into the void was a contractual / filler deal (same as the split ep itself). there had been so many comparisons made between the bands the guys in kyuss finally just said eff it and recorded a cover. ever notice the ridiculous similarities between the solo on the ItV cover and 'whitewater' (from sky valley)?

You're probably right.

I imagine you'll get a kick out of this. I was looking through the QOTSA forums and somebody reposted (copied and posted) an article they had in some magazine about the making of Welcome to Sky Valley. It's actually pretty cool.

mr dave 01-10-2009 04:34 PM

nice, thanks for that link :thumb:

you happen to know anything about what happened with 'man's ruin records' after the old man who ran it died? it's the label that put out the first few desert sessions and the QOTSA s/t. now that the old man is gone all those legal rights are stuck in limbo, which makes it REALLY freaking hard to find a new copy of that s/t for sale anywhere.

Mojo 01-10-2009 04:47 PM

...And The Circus Leaves Town was an obligation to Elektra records but I'm not sure about the split.

Not sure but they are definitely re-releasing it this year. There's also supposed to be a new QOTSA album in the mix, which is awesome.

mr dave 01-10-2009 06:41 PM

awesome hehe a friend and i were just discussing a new queens disc over the holiday, it seemed about due. i'll definitely be keeping an eye open for the re-release too.

rev. flying v 01-14-2009 11:16 AM

after all these kyuss-related bands being listed, i was surprised to see that no one mentioned brant bjork. he drummed for kyuss and fu manchu and now he plays guitar and writes incredible songs and jams. brant bjork is the bob marley of rock n' roll, as those running stonerrock.com like to say. going to a gig of his will be the highlight of your year

Mojo 01-14-2009 11:22 AM

I missed an opportunity to go and see Brant Bjork. A mates band were supporting too, it would have been awesome no doubt.

almauro 01-14-2009 07:00 PM

Brant's had a very long and interesting career. I thought CHE "Sounds of Liberation" was one of the better post-Kyuss projects.

FlapstheVulture 01-14-2009 11:11 PM

I just got into kyuss. If anybody could help me grab some of there stuff that would be GREAT. Homme rocks so hard

Everyone is entitled to there opinion, especially you...but WHAT!!!??? Clutch wishes it came close to the dirt on the bottom of Kyuss's feet.

Why isnt this thread being posted in every day?? Kyuss is most influential stoner band apart from acts like Sleep and Sabbath. mean Holme and Bjork in one band...how can that not beg for attention. The only mistake is I have not seen them live and I am sure there's no reunion on its way. So please any metal or even rock fans please check these albums out as they are the cornerstone to half of the heavy music made today.
