The 4 classic Slayer albums are:

Reign in Blood, South of Heaven, Seasons in the Abyss and God Hates Us All.

God Hates Us All is particuarly impressive, as it came out when NU-Metal was still popular and made a statement, by showing the NU Metal brigade what metal actually is.

The only two poor Slayer albums are Show No Mercy and Diabolus in Musica

Really? I thought God Hates Us All was pretty awful, but that's just my opinion.

And you don't like Show No Mercy? That album was great!

First two albums were very mediocre. The song disciple is pretty cool but the rest of the album loses appeal with each listen. They way overuse production tricks to cover up the fact they're so past their peak at that point.

Then again, I just like Disciple because it's ruthlessly anti-Christian. I'm sure it gets a lot more points in my head due to that.

I don't get the hate for the first 2 Slayer albums.

I think they have a kind of dumb charm to them.

I like the naivety of Show No Mercy but it is nothing special really when compared to many albums that came about at the same time but try as I might I just find Hell Awaits a rehearsal for things to come although the Haunting The Chapel E.P is great.

As for Reign In Blood being too quiet production wise I think it is produced superbly and sounds like it was recorded yesterday. Stunning snare sound. Araya's vocals never sounded better and the usual rambling Slayer guitar solos are used to maximum effect.

With the exception of the vocals, the live version sounds infinitely more powerful. To me, the entire album sounds extremely muffled(I think it's the way the guitars are recorded). I don't know why. I don't get that from Seasons in the Abyss, or South Of Heaven at all. However, for some reason Reign In Blood has always just sounded weak. Maybe I need to hear the vinyl version or something...

For me, Hell Awaits is incredibly good the whole way through. I'm not sure why. The production sucks but maybe the songs would sound a lot better if they'd had Rick Rubin produce them.

Of course, Reign In Blood sounds better.

My second favorite is Hell Awaits. 3rd is Show No Mercy. And I honestly love the album cover. All thrash bands in the early-80s had stupid hand drawn album covers. This one is memorable because it reflects the true greatness of Slayer.
