Original sounds shouldn't be considered generic if nobody else was making them at the time. Even if the sounds were rendered generic by latecomers.

I love the first few releases "Show No Mercy", "Haunting the Chapel", "Live Undead" and "Hell Awaits" a ton. I seem to be in a minority when I say "Reign In Blood" gets more credit than it deserves. To me that album is good for the bookmark tracks. But the tracks in between don't live up to it and feel like filler to me. I like the early days better than what they started with "Reign in Blood".. though "South of Heaven" and "Seasons in the Abyss" had there moments, I will still take those early albums over them.
I agree with every bit of this except, overall, I love Reign in Blood like everybody else.

"Filler" songs usually only get labelled that way by people who simply don't like them. It's fine to dislike songs but calling any song on Reign In Blood "filler" is an undeserved insult to Slayer. It's not like they needed to come up with some bullshit to "fill up" an album that's only about 30 minutes long. I believe they wrote/performed each of those songs with equal care.

I mean filler in generic terms. The rest of the songs just don't have the impact of the big 2 on it. It feels like they just added those to suppliment that album's run time. None of them really stand out to me.

I doubt it felt that way to Slayer. It doesn't feel that way to me.

I just can't imagine them going to Rubin and saying "We've got two good ones - you want some other crap to fill up an album?"

I am sure they did not... but that is just how it feels to my ears. That is what I am saying. No one intends to do so.

Gotta love Reign in Blood, pure aggressive metal at its best!

i prefer "Seasons in the Abyss" and "South of Heaven" over the early stuff, though I do like "Reign in Blood" dearly

jus because it's slower and riff-based, doesn't mean it ain't as heavy

Like I said, I sort of agree with you. The majority of the album just kind of sounds the same for the most part. The songs are awesome anyway, but they do tend to run together.

While I do love Reign and South of Heaven, would it be crazy to say that Slayer are the "AC/DC" of thrash metal? They know what they're doing, they do it well, and they don't change?

Are you talking about Diabolus In Musica and God hates us all? (I actually haven't heard those, are they any good?)
