Technical ability isn't useless. What's useless is a guitarist who thinks he's the greatest solely because of his technical ability.

When you think about it, technical ability limits what you can possibly play. You might be able to think of a great melody in your head, but unless you can actually play it, you have a problem.

Of course, some people will never be limited by technical ability because what they want to play isn't difficult. In which case, technicality isn't as relevant to their playing style. But either way, technicality isn't useless. It's just less important for some people.

i had to choose one so hailing from texas i gave it up to SRV. it was really a 3 way tie between SRV, Jimi Hendrix, and Satriani in my books. Jimmy Page being in the top 10 of course along with BB King and Eric Clapton.

Seriously, unless it's already been said, with regards to Kurt kobain being in a poll for greatest technical guitarist ever....eh??? ok, ok, i mean i'm sure he had his moments and was priobably a pretty ok guitarists but really, his riffs weren't that great and he wasn't that technical. to put him in competition on these basis with people like zappa and jeff beck is absurd isn't it?
