Favorite bands and WHY

There is probably a thread about this, but I'm not gonna look. So shoot me for being lazy. I was wondering what everyone's favorite bands were AND WHY. I listed a whole bunch here because I'm bored.

Avenged Sevenfold(earlier stuff was great, sad that Shadows has to ease on the screaming)

Cradle of Filth(Dani has a strange tone in his screaming. The music is just beautiful in my opinion. Terrific stories. Damnation and a Day is one of the best albums ever.)

AFI(I like the later stuff, like Sing the Sorrow, nice riffs and Davey has a good voice)

My Chemical Romance(Like both old and new)

Mindless Self Indulgence(great band live, love the sound)

Weezer(From Blue Album to Make Believe, great band. Love the lyrics)

Red Hot Chili Peppers(Nothing I could say about this band would justify my love. Talented and wonderful)

No Doubt(I fell in love when they first came out with self titled No Doubt but they slowly wound down. Return of Saturn was the breaking point)

Modest Mouse(Weird vocals....dont like vocals too much, but lyrics are great and melodies are great)

Motley Crue(Also great live. Oh, what I wouldnt give to party with them. Nikki Sixx is a great wongwriter and he's a ****ing badass.)

HIM(Ville Valo has a great range and a nice crooner voice. nuff said)

Dresden Dolls(Just weird. Awesome lyrics)

HelloGoodbye(more of a pop-punk thing. But the tunes are catchy)

Pavement(strange mix of country, blues and rock. It just sounds good. They also did a great cover of "The Killing Moon" by Echo and the Bunnymen. They remind me of the Cure)

Lacuna Coil(Its nice hearing a frontWOMAN sometimes)

We Are Wolves(Also just really weird band. Kinda fun to listen to)

The Cure(I'm an 80s child at heart, born in the wrong decade. I mean, I can pull off the hair and I prefer 80s music to much of today's. I just love the Cure in all aspects....'cept Robert Smith's hair because he's scary to watch)

Xiu Xiu(Although there is one song that just scares me...I like the originality)
Hawthorne Heights(Really sucks live. But I still love Ohio is for Lovers. Call me a loser, I'll admit it)

69 Eyes(Just got into this band after hearing a demo. Sounds just like Type O Negative, but more meoldic. And Type O Negative does really bad covers)

Twisted Sister(I almost got a internship at the company that manages them. Oh, I would love to meet Dee Snider. He could kick anyones ass in makeup!)

Marilyn Manson(Love the sound, not nescessarily him. He is ****ed up in the head)

Ozzy Osbourne(Along with Black Sabbath. And who doesnt like Ozzy, c'mon)

Rammstein(All around fun to listen to)
and

Blind Guardian(really talented band, love the vocals. Interesting stories to tell through their lyrics.)

I think I got most of my favorite bands. I'm interested to read what everyone else has to say.

The Fall Of Troy - Amazing guitarin' and screaming. They can really put together a nice album.
The Blood Brothers - REALLY AWESOME vocals, crazy music and awesome lyrics.
Converge - The screaming is pretty, and the lyrics are like crazy good.
Trophy Scars - Some of the songs are beyond amazing, (baby eskimo kisses, jerrys the name etc..) the others are also good. The mixture of screaming/singing is awesome and the very good lyrics.
Bright Eyes - The lyrics are very good sometime, he can make some very good songs.
Thursday - Geoff Rickly's lyrics = amazing. Hes a genius when it comes to that, and the post-hardcore sound is like perfected with them.
Circle Takes The Square - The screaming is sooo good, and they can really put together an awesome album.
Saetia - Really amazing lyrics, the musicianship is amazing. Their debut is like amazing, each song is great.
Million Dead - Really good lyrics, amazing vocals and such.
Thrice - They can really put together an album beautifully, dustin has an amazing scream and the lyrics are awesome.
Finch They blend pop-punk and post-hardcore amazingly, the lyrics are really good and nate has an awesome voice.
Poison The Well - Really good lyrics, I love the persons scream and they we're one of the first hardcore bands I got into.

Cannibal Corpse- Technically brilliant

Decapitated- Superb riffage

Gorgoroth Superb black metal

Lamb Of God Catchy heavy and clever lyrics

Metallica The band that got me into metal music

Pantera Such a tight band musically

Finially got why done lol

riseagainstrocks 03-09-2006 05:21 PM

to Pipers, when you make long list, it helps to break things up. It becomes easier to read. :)

Between the Buried and Me - Technically superb and one of the truly original bands performing today. The guitar work of Paul Waggoner is absolutly amazing and the rest of the band is top notch. Every one of their 3 albums is different and inventive. Amazing band.

With Passion - Sheer inventiveness. And now that they recruited the guitarist from Conducting From The Grave IT'LL ONLY GET FASTER!

Genghis Tron - techno meets hardcore. I'll say nothing more

Hardcore 03-09-2006 05:56 PM

Blind Guardian- They combine all sorts of old school metal, and a bit of blues too. They also sing about LOTR, which is why I got into them...

I fixed this one, cause I went back and realized it was kinda jumbled. Thanks for pointing that out.

i think the same thing.

my list for now:

Sunny Day Real Estate:
they really know how to rock there instruments. the lead singer has a very different type of voice, and knows how to write good/great songs. this band pulls me in.

Alkaline Trio:
this band, is a perfect mix of punk, and pop.. there's no post hardcore or anything here. there songs go from being really personal and heart hitting to really down right stupid and funny. these three guys really know how to get there fans attention with there fun music.

Pink Floyd:
Dare i say it.. cause of there MANY amazing albums with all those amazingly writen songs.. to david gilmore guitar playing, and i dare not forget Rogers voice.. as well as whne David and Roger sing together (same time) when there voices mix its amazing, very good sound.

Judas Priest:
Rob's voice, his writings are great. Some of there songs start to sound the same after a while but i love there songs either way.. this band is amazing and really knows what there at in the metal scene.. they always catch my eye just when i expect to lose interest.

Led Zeppelin:
this band is the perfect mix of blues/pop/rock and a little hint of country here and there.. but together makes songs like All of my Love, Dy'er M'aker, tangerine, Houses of the Holy.. there sound doesn't seem awkward to me.. like Bright Eyes, he/them/that band seem to go all over many type of music aswell BUT! there music actaully changes.. like it seems like a totally different band to me. With Zeppelin its more like you can always tell your listening to them.. the way Boham was playing the drums, the way the base and guitar was being playing.. to Robert Plants amazing voice.. it was so easy for me to fall in love with this bad growing up.

thats it for now..

mosesandtherubberducky 03-09-2006 06:35 PM

Lard- Just got into them by recomendation of MURDER JUNKIE. I like hearing Jello with a driving guitar and drums behind him.

Dead Milkmen- Just got into them also. The humor is great, but they do have some serious songs.

Big Black- I love noise, so of course I'm going to love this band.

Goon- Finnish Ska, it may be a gimmik but it is a hella good one.

Robert Johnson- All his songs he sounds like he is singing from his soul and just puts everything into them

Reverend Horton Heat- Rockabilly+Psychobilly and then there is the fact that The Rev. is an insanely smooth guitarist and Jimbo is a great bassist. Also they have a great humor about them.

I'll stop there.

West)Blair 03-09-2006 08:03 PM

Children of Bodom-I love the keyboards and Laiho is awesome. (&This was the first band that got me into metal.)
Light This City- I like the vocals. Very nice.(for a female)
Diabolical Masquerade-mind blowing. It is the sex

West)Blair 03-09-2006 08:09 PM

ohh and i forgot..

Liquid Tension Experiment-John Petrucci. Enough said.

Mr Sensitive 03-10-2006 04:58 AM

Radiohead - If you haven't heard any of their stuff pick up a copy of Amnesiac, it'll be the best decision you'll ever make.

The Smiths - The musical combination of Morrissey and Johnny Marr is excellent and cannot be faulted

Joy Division - Ian Curtis' voice is the best thing since sliced bread really.

The Mars Volta - Hacen música que puedo realmente perderme adentro.

David Bowie - His music is excellent, plus he is the goblin king.

Jeff Buckley - Jeff Buckley's voice is amazing, but it's a real shame he had to die so soon

Elliott Smith - His music is wonderful, and he seemed like a very beautiful person.

Pink Floyd - You gotta love David Gilmour's guitar playing.

Muse - Recently I have rediscovered my love for Muse, Showbiz is a great album.

Forgot them too. I just have way too many favorites to remember.

littleknowitall 03-10-2006 12:05 PM

iron maiden - heavy metal gods, countless albums filled with sheer orgasmic songs, the awsomeness that is eddie, the best live band i've ever seen, my first and only favourite band ever since i was a wee little metaller still ****ting myself and crawling round the living room in one of my dads heavy metal shirts, some of the leaders of the brittish wave of heavy metal, and pure brilliance in a nut shell, favourite album would probably be killers because it contains most of my favourite songs such as murder in the rue morgue and wrathchild and i much prefer aul d'iannos vocals and clive burrs drumming.

the clash - combat rock was on of the first albums i ever bought, they are what compell me to listen to punk, and that is still one of my favorutie albums to this day.

metallica - i saw them live and what can i say...genious

frank zappa - for that man to write and play what he does without being under the influence of drugs means i think he deserved a knighthood from the queen, one of my favourite guitarists and i've not grown tired of one of his songs, ever..lets make the water turn black was great.

pink floyd, aerosmith and guns 'n' roses - my childhood anthems, i grew up listening to these, and ill never be able to lose interest.

saxon - im tired...im gonna stop explaining here...

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-10-2006 12:29 PM

Primal Scream - Musical diversity with a rock n roll attitude

Motorhead - Pure rock n roll played at brute force by a guy who`s seen it all & done it all

Nick Drake - Has more raw emotion in his toenail than a million emo bands have in their collective bodies.

David Bowie - Could turn his hand to any musical genre and do it better than most others , and still make it sound like himself

Super Furry Animals - If there was a genre called Prog Pop they invented it

Rolling Stones - Between 1968 & 1972 no band on earth could touch them. Not even the Beatles.

Radiohead - Never failed to impress me yet , if I don`t like a Radiohead song then i`m the one at fault not them , I can`t say that about any other band.

The Fall - 28 years of Mark E Smith singlemindedly doing what the f*ck he likes and not apologising , not conforming & not letting a single factor get in the way of his message , not even other band members.I don`t like all they`ve done by a long shot but when they`re good nobody can touch them.

Merkaba 03-10-2006 02:17 PM

Ah so that completes the Urban 100 then.

Friday 03-10-2006 02:31 PM

The Smiths - Anyone as lyrically talented as Morrissey should be idolised.

Roxy Music - No one quite does eccentric like Ferry.

David Bowie - The Thin White Duke has such an abstract mind that his lyrics put a whole new perspective on many issues.

The Jam - Fast snappy mod punk and yet soft poetic ballads .

Radiohead - There's nothing I can say to describe how Radiohead grabbed me by the face and shook sense into my body.

The Cure - Robert Smith is everything a good lead singer should be.

Joy Division - Deep, dark and indulgent.

Jeff Buckley - Truly beautiful , in every sense of the word.

Manic Street Preachers - I'm not at all interested in James but Richey's words fascinate me.

Pantera - America's finest, so many bitching songs. Favourite song - Domination.

Tool - Champion band, rather then a band of champions. Favourite song - Third Eye

Porcupine Tree - The music is hard, soft, it's all about the Space effects and I love it. Favourite song - Trains

Kyuss - I love the bass drenched rock, and the vocals are perfect. Methodical love. Favourite song - Gloria Lewis. No, Size Queen. No, Phototropic. I can't do it.

Motorhead - I love Lemmy's vocals, Phil Taylor is one seriously underated drummer. Favourite song - Born To Raise Hell

Clutch - Strong vocals and I like the originality and power displayed by them. Favourite song - The Mob Goes Wild.

I should send you Primal Screams cover of Motorhead.
I never thought in a million years i`d hear someone take one of Lemmys songs and make it even noisier.

Merkaba 03-10-2006 03:41 PM

Heck, why not send me a Primal Scream album while we're at it:D

Symphony X IS amazing. But I just couldnt get too into them while listening to Blind Guardian and Sonata Arctica at the same time. I dont think I could handle three bands that sound the same.

Laces Out Dan! 03-10-2006 10:31 PM

 Are you joking....Symphony X and Blind Guardian sound nothing alike....i am huge into both of those bands and my god they're quite different....BG being Epic/melodic metal and symphony X being just progressive metal....it must have just slipped your mind

I've got about 9 of their songs and they're really good, but not as good as DT.:p:

Don 03-11-2006 04:15 AM

No ****, Symphony X wishes they were DT. Well that's why they've been copying DT to death all these years lol.

My top 5 favourite bands:
Angra, cos I like them,
Pagan's Mind, cos I like them,
Circus Maximus, cos I like them,
LTE, cos I like them and...
DT, cos I hate them.

(Shadow Gallery, Adagio and Nevermore tie for sixth)

Maybe I should chuck in SX cos “The Odyssey” ****ing pwns most **** I've heard. But they're not all that consistent, I love five other songs from them: “Candlelight Fantasia”, “A Fool's Paradise,” “Of Sins and Shadows,” “Out of the Ashes” and “Inferno (Unleash the Fire).” The rest are average at best.

Symphony X sound like DT in the same way Dimmu Borgir sound like The Cars.

Don 03-11-2006 06:52 AM

When did I say SX sound like DT? What I meant was they stole many ideas and concepts from them. They even admit it in tons of interviews.

Talon 03-11-2006 08:56 AM

Dream Theater - complex as hell, but still has a strong melodic discography in Images and Words and Awake.

Ozzy Osbourne - Randy Rhodes rocked.

System of a Down - Extremely simple guitars, but the vocals are exceptionally engaging.

Queen - Obvious.

I dunno, might have just been the vocals or the certain song I listen to. I'll admit I only heard one song from Symphony X. I guess I should listen to some more. I'm not afraid to admit I was mistaken.

Laces Out Dan! 03-11-2006 12:54 PM

I thinks the vocals are one of the factors that differ between the bands the most

judas_priest 03-11-2006 01:26 PM

I don't personally think DT and SX sound that similar, but it does seem to be a common comparison to make, and they are both progressive metal bands, so Pipers isn't totally wrong.

Laces Out Dan! 03-11-2006 01:59 PM

he wasnt comparing those two bands......he said that blind guardian and symphony X sound exactly the same
