^ Welcome to MB, TheWaitingRoom:)

Have you heard of a Japanese band called Te' ? They're some very strong post-rock, I'd give you the album name but it's really long and Japanese haha.

Edit: Ah found it, "Naraba, imi kara kaihou sareta hibiki ha ''oto'' no sekai no shinen wo kataru".

spark10036 12-12-2008 09:03 AM

well I voted prog, but really I don't believe that such a style exists. I think it's called progressive because it sounds like anything performed before

dac 12-12-2008 01:47 PM

I really feel that post-rock should be considered in this...

You'd put that under alternative.

I think it's more a important subgenre than rap-rock or hair metal, but oh well... i went Alternative.

well it's called post-rock cause it's not rock. it's music after rock, like when we say post-war.

Technically I suppose, but it really has essentially all elements of rock and roll... the term post rock seems a bit off.

Maddest_Hatter 12-12-2008 10:53 PM

I voted Punk. True Punk is raw, simple, pure emotion, not over produced, even has poor sound quality sometimes. Like Black Flag, Misfits, Ramones, Bad Religion, Dead Kennedys. :band:

Saying it's not rock would be awfully pretentious. Its sound is definitely no less rock than dozens of other obscure sub-genres that have been previously categorized under rock (see the sound of Krautrock bands like Can, Neu and so forth - often a lot more "post-rock" than the bands these days grouped under that heading).

"Post-genre", when used these days, does not seem to really exclude the music from fitting into that genre. Look at "post-hardcore" music. It's still essentially hardcore, the real idea being that it's merely moved on from what hardcore typically once was.

Banther 12-17-2008 08:45 PM

probably post-rock...

Since rock isn't dead does that mean post-rock doesn't exist?

If post-rock doesn't exist then wtf have i been listening to for the last 4 months?

Raust 12-20-2008 06:48 PM

This wasn't easy, but I had to choose alternative. It didn't win by much, but overall I perfer alternative over my second choice, heavy metal.

MetalChaos 12-21-2008 01:21 PM

Metal all the way.

onlineticketspot.com. 12-25-2008 11:54 PM

My favorite style is Classic and Heavy Metal. They both have their own appearance.

ikvat 12-26-2008 02:13 AM

Garage for me!

lucylamppost 12-26-2008 10:03 AM

classic i well classic

scottsy 12-27-2008 10:35 PM

Well, if I am totally, truly honest with myself, I gotta say I am prog rock sorta guy...

I listen to a good many different genres - I love alternative, I love metal and i don't even mind a good dabbling in classic rock...

But in all those genres, i am looking for something different, something that pushes boundaries, that extends rock music as an artistic / expressive form.

So while i may not be a prog rock completist or purist, I look for a progressive angle in all genres, and i gravitate towards bands with prog rock leanings.

heart_jenny792 12-28-2008 05:18 PM

I like hard rock like new found glory and muse

scottsy 12-28-2008 08:20 PM

No offence intended, but the only thing that puts me completely off muse is the singers big deep breaths in between sentences he sings in his songs - it really puts me off though, I dunno if I hone in on it too much now and its a distraction, but if you're listening for it can really bug ya...

As far as their music and song structures go though, I'm sure they beat the hell out of alot of stuff out there - but damn that vocal tick...

Sonny 12-28-2008 09:55 PM

Alternative, for sure.

escapethefate 01-01-2009 09:44 PM

Definately Alternative...screamo for sure :D

i agree, but i doubt we mean the same thing.

metallicafan27 01-01-2009 10:35 PM

i like all of i those genres. unless rap metal falls into heavy metal then i 3/4 like heavy metal.

scottsy 01-01-2009 10:37 PM

rap metal is sitting in a box somewhere in the great hall of musical genres, and on the outside of that box is a label saying "please discard"...

ValeBartoloz 01-02-2009 11:43 AM

progressive
but i like too much lynyrd skynyrd and i have to add southern:beer:

FaSho 01-02-2009 09:04 PM

It's gotta be alternative...sadly.

scottsy 01-02-2009 09:19 PM

Judging by the Cds I pulled out listen to last night - I actually got through five, no interruptions from my favorite three anklebiters - I am still very much the alternative listener... I basically listened to five late 90's early 00's albums - all of which had an alternative edge to them, and quite a few were bands in the R.E.M / Pixies / Nirvana sound and attitude vein...

So yeah, gotta say alternative is still definitely the dominant style of music I prefer... with leanings towards both metal AND ambient music.... I am a bit all over the place in that regard...

mofito 01-04-2009 02:21 PM

Classic Rock is the best... Eric Clapton, Moody Blue :)

scottsy 01-04-2009 09:50 PM

Classic rock is great don't get me wrong... but I;ve heard so much classic rock, I generally don't seek it out in my listening and buying habits.... I tend to gravitate to stuff that has a particular sound - like Alternative and its sub genres, metal and oits sub genres, or some more mellow, ambient electronic stuff... I have some leanings towards prog and post - rock as well...

boo boo 01-04-2009 10:14 PM

These are really lame choices. Classic rock is not a genre. Alternative is argubly one, but like prog it's incredibly broad, it's weird to compare such broad genres to stuff like goth and hair metal. I mean couldnt goth just fall under alternative and hair metal under metal? Why add them?

yeah, the choices are not great at all. this shouldnt really be a poll. it should be an open question - what is your favourite 'genre' of rock? then people can put it down in their own terms.

FaSho 01-05-2009 02:56 PM

Hair Metal 1 vote: motley_crue131Rap/Rock 1 vote: Juggalo4life88

Wayfarer 01-15-2009 09:59 AM

whatever "stoner rock" would fall under.

boo boo 01-15-2009 10:01 AM

Metal?

The Unfan 01-15-2009 10:11 AM

Prog isn't really a style as much as it is a structure. So voting for it seems odd, but my choice teeters somewhere between heavy metal, punk, and prog.

jenkyfats 01-15-2009 03:29 PM

genre

my favorite genre should probably be heavy metal, since i listen to 90% of it, but i picked prog. i just love me some weird ass time sigs.

Best prog list
1. Rush
2. Dream Theater
3. Between the Buried and Me
4. Protest the Hero

The last two obviously a little heavier. i just love techy guitar parts.

The Unfan 01-15-2009 03:33 PM

How the **** are Protest The Hero prog?

jenkyfats 01-15-2009 09:23 PM

have you heard their latest album? dammit. maybe i just need to get a genre dictionary. can someone give a good ass definition of prog music?

After trying to find that out for a while, I think its usually just considered Psychedelic Rock. Not a perfect fit but t makes sense.

And I think this poll need some more options :(
