oh, ok

grrrl_riot 09-25-2006 05:25 PM

I couldn't decide. My favorite would have to be punk and heavy metal.

tdoc210 09-25-2006 05:35 PM

well, goth and glam sort of go hand in hand, and i keep going back to this genre one way or another. It really is my favourite type of music. David Bowie, Bauhaus, Joy Division, adam and the ants, christian death, lour reed, iggy pop. oh my

rsnjeff 09-25-2006 09:59 PM

It's got to be Metal because you have so many genres with in it.

sainthood 09-25-2006 11:26 PM

Punk, but pre-95 stuff.

burnitdown 10-20-2006 09:01 PM

I've gotta say Hard Rock/Alt-Metal. Heavy but not too heavy.

tardis 10-21-2006 02:19 AM

Out of the poll choices I chose prog, but specifically I've been really getting into space-rock lately (ie. Hawkwind)

Merkaba 10-21-2006 02:39 AM

Hawkwind are great, though I tried falling asleep to them last night but some of their prolonged space sounds made me restless.

tardis 10-21-2006 02:43 AM

Yeah, I don't think I could fall asleep listening to them either...

boo boo 10-21-2006 08:24 AM

OMG... It's an all out brawl between prog and metal now.

tardis 10-21-2006 09:34 AM

^What about prog-metal, the best of both worlds?

boo boo 10-21-2006 04:07 PM

This is no surprise coming from me, but I like Prog Metal more than any other style of Metal... Except maybe Thrash.

Nightwish <3<3<3

shiftael 10-21-2006 06:57 PM

That is actauly touch one for me I grew up with classic but I also love heavy Metal, Punk and Hair metal, too.

To be honest, it doesn't surprise me, but I wouldn't be surprised if prog wasn't your favourite form of metal.

I love metal, but prog metal often seems to abandon its roots too much in favour of technicality. When they get it right, it is awesome but it's horrible when they get it wrong.

And that is why I wouldn't be surprised. I thought you might see the bad form of prog metal as a bastardization of prog rock.

However, I am not surprised you like thrash after that - it does have links to punk.

swim 10-22-2006 11:16 AM

There are 7 people on this forum that like punk?

It's one of my more recent likings, even though its' been several years now, but yes, here's one that likes punk.

enemyat_thesix 10-22-2006 01:44 PM

Yea I mean it's not like the most accessible genre in the (western) world or anything.

woahairplane 10-22-2006 02:05 PM

indie

tdoc210 10-22-2006 02:15 PM

is not a genre =D

woahairplane 10-22-2006 02:35 PM

since when is indie not a genre?

enemyat_thesix 10-22-2006 03:21 PM

indie is short for independent, and simply says that an artist either

1. records and produces their own material, or
2. is signed to a small (though not always) independent label (one that isn't owned by a giant corporation, i.e. Virgin Records, Warner Bros., etc.)

someone please correct me if i'm mistaken.

You're correct good sir but you will find the majority of people are unaware of this fact.

That's why I hate Dream Theater so much.

genre is defined by sound
not record label

swim 10-22-2006 04:31 PM

What's so hard to understand that indie (refering to sound) is other?

Indie isn't a sound though!

cardboard adolescent 10-22-2006 04:37 PM

Isn't indie (rock, pop, whatever) just one of the many branches of alternative rock?

lol no indie is not a sound. Things like mtv and even pitchforkmedia put that name out there as any band thats rock and not horribly mainstream...even though some of them are such as death cab or bright eyes.

tdoc210 10-22-2006 05:23 PM

thats why indie isnt a genre, its alternative, but not produced alternative

Wha, I thought Bright Eyes was indie? Or is Saddle Creek a major label now?

Anyway, technically indie is a genre because a genre is a group linked together by whatever that connects them. Most things are genres, deal.

Plus someone could like independent rock you know.

cardboard adolescent 10-22-2006 05:53 PM

Indie might not be a genre but indie rock or indie pop certainly are.

Arguing otherwise is useless, if they're used as genre labels they are genre labels.

I forgot bright eyes was still on saddle creek haha.

indie isn't a genre of music. It's not a specific sound. It's far far far too vague.

spincer182 10-23-2006 04:47 AM

Punk all the way!!!

And the only thing that does connect them is being on a small label... Hence, nearly every band in existence started out as Indie.
