Progressive.
Most everything progressive just seems so much more technical and more interesting to listen to.

cardboard adolescent 10-23-2006 06:04 PM

If you want "interesting" listen to The Residents or Acid Mothers Temple. Now that's interesting.

RhythmGod 10-23-2006 06:08 PM

Yeah I ahve. They are "interesting..."
Not a big fan of them. But if they float your boat, that's good for you.

cardboard adolescent 10-23-2006 06:10 PM

They sure do. When it comes to prog I'm more of a fusion/krautrock kinda guy. And Henry Cow. I dig them too.

boo boo 10-23-2006 06:27 PM

For the most part, Metal is probably more technical than Prog.

Even though Prog musicians tend to be much more versatile, and much much more interesting and creative in my opinion.

RhythmGod 10-23-2006 06:39 PM

^Exactly.
I can't say prog metal because it's not rock.

cardboard adolescent 10-23-2006 06:40 PM

It seems that nowadays everyone has a very skewed perception of what exactly "rock" is.

RhythmGod 10-23-2006 06:47 PM

well tell me please...what is rock?

cardboard adolescent 10-23-2006 06:50 PM

I think rock is a very hard to term to define, but in general it's used as an umbrella term for mostly guitar-oriented music that has its roots in country and blues, however detached it may be. Basically, I can't define rock, but I know it when I hear it.

swim 10-23-2006 06:51 PM

Music that directly or indirectly evolved from blues and R&B.

cardboard adolescent 10-23-2006 06:51 PM

Yeah, but rap evolved from R&B.

Merkaba 10-23-2006 07:16 PM

I may have written a thread on rock somewhere but I can't remember where I put it.

Cardboard layed it out pretty accurately though.

ooh i can

rock-mineral matter of variable composition, consolidated or unconsolidated, assembled in masses or considerable quantities in nature, as by the action of heat or water.

True, yet oddly enough Prog is still accepted as being a kind of Rock (hence "prog rock"), even though it shares more in common with Classical and Jazz, but it did envolve from Psychedelic Rock which (in part) evolved from R&B, so that might be the reason.

cardboard adolescent 10-23-2006 09:18 PM

If you can indirectly trace it back to Chuck Berry, it's probably rock.

boo boo 10-23-2006 09:22 PM

Probably can't do that with Prog... The Prog band that has come the closest to Rock N Roll is Hawkwind.

cardboard adolescent 10-23-2006 09:27 PM

Maybe not directly, but if you trace their influences I'm sure the ones that aren't Stravinsky or Coltrane were probably influenced somewhere along the lines by first wave rock n' roll.

A lot of prog bands, for instance, would claim The Beatles or Zappa as influences, and I'm sure both of them were influenced by Chuck Berry.

Good point.

Didn't think about The Beatles, but Yes, KC, Genesis and many others have listed them as influences so they count I suppose.

But I dunno, everyone influenced by Chuck Berry probably shouldn't qualify as Rock, because I believe there are Reggae and Country musicians who are influenced by him, and by similar logic, if being influenced by John Coltrane makes you Jazz, The Doors would be Jazz.

Definitely. Prog shares so many characteristics with psychedelic rock.

Unfortunately many people tend to forget about psychedelic rock since it basically died out, and it's hard to find anything but the most popular psychedelia.

But like you said, prog does owe a hell of a lot to classical and jazz as well.

indie isn't a genre of music. It's not a specific sound. It's far far far too vague.

Conor Oberst sort of owns Saddle Creek, donchaknow?

Personally, I like instrumental indie rock like Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Ghosts and Vodka.

coffeeshop 11-09-2006 09:53 AM

Probably alternative as I like a lot of bands which fit in that category like Sonic Youth and Joy Division for example.

misunderstood 11-16-2006 09:41 PM

Hmm, I like many styles of rock but I think I usually stick to alot of bands in the prog-rock sub-genre.

Kurt_Cobain 11-17-2006 08:15 AM

I think if you like rock you can listen to all the sub-genres, I just kinda depends what mood you're in. So I like all of the above. But not at once ;)

Sneer 11-17-2006 10:11 AM

thats not true. i like several types of rock but i cannot stomach hair metal for example. rap rock is pretty shocking too.

Don`t be silly

Led Zep practically invented it single handedly.

Falcon 11-17-2006 09:26 PM

I cant vote on just one. I dislike alot of like new rock and so called 'punk' rock, but classic is good, so i'll go with that.

tdoc210 11-29-2006 08:03 PM

I voted prog, but i can't really choose, right now i'd have to say a mixture between new wave and stoner rock

Beautiful Downgrade 11-30-2006 12:51 AM

Metal for me.

NaNaNer 12-13-2006 03:15 PM
