Which decade has the better music? (electronic, indie, metal, punk)

The 80's were pretty great, as were a lot of other decades, but it was during that time where I was immersed into the guitar scene. It was all wide open back then with the creation of the Rockman from Tom Schulz (Boston), and it was just touching on the PC/Tech generation with Casio and other synth technologies being used more and more in the industry (Devo, Art Of Noise, Tommita, etc.). You really needed to have talent to make it, as in say, Madonna. She could sing. Really sing. Today you have people like Iggy, who can rap, and maybe hold a note, but I haven't seen much in the way of any singing talent, which I am only using as an example to illustrate my point. Out of all the decades, I'll take 80's as being my favorite.

The 80s was the birth of Pop (aka Garbage) where the previous decade was about artistic expression and required talent to be an "artist".

For me it's the 80's to the beginning of the 90's

That's when bands like The Pixies, Pavement and Sonic youth started, oh, Kas product too, i didn't know know them back then but that was their era.

The 80s was more prominent in materialism though. Look at what happened to Heart. Also the birth of electronic kick snare drums and vocalist that didn't play instruments. Dumbed down music decade imho.

I don't even want to think about it. It's really sad.

I had no idea that Heart was the only band in the 80s, I had figured that other groups existed (who also didn't suck from the get go). That's crazy though! I'd never heard of an artist deviating from their original sound before the 80s.

I guess I must have missed Heart sucking and paid too much attention to the birth of hip hop, the rise of indie labels allowing a wider range of bands to be able to have albums out than ever before, watching outsider music become more common through tape trading, watching electronic music become mainstream, metal diversifying and dance music becoming more diverse instead.

I didn't mean to pick on the 1980s, it's just that I was surprised that it was winning since it's usually the most bashed decade, while music from the 1960s gets a lot of love around these parts. The '80s were like any other decade; they had the painfully commercial shlock (Pop), the alternative current of more "intellectual" music that was still catchy in it's own right (New Wave, as well as the awesome Post-Punk bands that survived into the '80s), the off-the-walls experimentalists (Avant-Garde), the uncompromising underground rockers (Punk and Garage Revival), and a few interesting scenes (the Paisley Underground, for starters) as well as a handful of musical genres that were gaining popularity and reaching their zenith (Hip Hop, Techno). Normally, I'm quick to call the '80s my least favorite time period, but I just recently sat down and made a mix of songs from the decade and I was legitimately surprised at how many of my favorite songs and bands came out of it. Not only that, but whenever I play the mix for people, everyone (even the really stuck-up person who only listens to really abstract and "intellectual" stuff) ends up really liking at least one song.

The 80s was the era of post punk, no wave, goth, hardcore, thrash, death metal, black metal, industrial, EBM, etc. Just because you haven't taken the time to look beyond Starship doesn't mean there wasn't any great music.
