Women in Metal

I am writing a thesis paper on women in metal(more specifically I'm trying to write it on women screamers). If anyone could direct me to sites, professional journals, anything that would aid me in writing a paper like this, that would be great.

Also, i know only a few women screamers, so if you know any, lemme know. I have Candace from Walls of Jericho, Angela from Arch Enemy, the chick from Kittie and then Otep. Thats about all I could think of right now.

Thanks in advanced.

Sound Devastation 09-26-2006 03:40 AM

Mia from Kayo Dot does a bit of screaming.. also the girl from Rolo Tomassi.

shiftael 09-26-2006 11:57 AM

I would pitch in Wedny O Willimas, but she's no longer with us, but was graet all the same (RIP)

Raine 09-28-2006 05:27 PM

The Epoxies for sure.

glazedface 09-29-2006 03:40 PM

All That Remains has a female bassist...the great thing about her is that she doesnt look like your typical metal chick all. No stringy dyed black hair, no goth make up, no piercings, etc. just a normal looking girl w/ curly blonde hair.

DISLCAIMER: I am not a sexist pig.

Women don't belong in metal; or hardcore, onstage or otherwise. The thing that bugs me most about hardcore shows are the girls. They just stand around in their dotted shirts and spandex tights, taking up space that should be used for the pit. As far as onstage is concerned, they just don't belong there. Metal (and likewise, hardcore) are first and foremost about machismo ("a strong or exaggerated sense of manliness" [Dictionary.com]). Give it up, ladies.

At first it was comical; now it's aggravating.

Urban Hat€monger ? 10-10-2006 09:55 PM

I bet your single

breakingbenfan13 10-10-2006 11:38 PM

LOL wouldn't doubt it

I love female fronted bands especially Nightwish even though Tarja left but theres also Epica, After Forever, To Mera (newcomers) Tacere (also new), Stream Of Passion, Arch Enemy, Amaran etc.

and of course Rush

enemyat_thesix 10-11-2006 12:07 AM

Actually, I am quite un-single.

...and I'm not ***, either. So there.

Now is anyone going to address what I said? I'm interested in what you guys' opinions are.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 10-11-2006 01:07 AM

Flowers In the Attic and 1905 both have female screamers.

Oh but you are a sexist pig.

However I do believe woman have no place in metal, but my motivations are not sexist, because I also believe men have no place in metal... Puh puh ching.

Just kidding folks. ;)

Sound Devastation 10-11-2006 05:42 AM

theres nothing stopping women getting involved in metal... but fact is very few are any good at it (hardcore and Avant Garde are a different matter). for most Metal the female vocal range doesnt go well with the music IMO and i hate operaric vocals. There are a few exceptions... but often i dont think it sounds right. As for female musicians, theyre as good/bad as the men, just not as common.

but saying Women shouldnt attend shows is sexist. i am as much a fan of music as any guy i know. pits are childish.

Muzak 10-11-2006 05:45 AM

The style of metal is just more masculine, which is why women are not as common at metal shows as guys. They certainly can be there but the style of metal is usually not appealing to females.

Sound Devastation 10-11-2006 05:54 AM

true... 'metal' (again excluding h/c and experimental) shows are not appealing to me at all.. too much booze, sweat and testosterone! i dont dislike pits because they're violent, but because i find them incredibly immature.

Just so ya know, I'm usually a forerunner in the pit. If nothing's going, I'll get it going. And at Gigantour this year I helped start a dirt fight. I agree with chicks that stand around though. I mean, I can effing mosh, and these lil twig girls there with their boyfriends get all pissed off when someone hits them. I hate it. I hit one of those girls with dirt on purpose! But girls do get in the pits at concerts.

boo boo 10-11-2006 08:01 AM

If you don't think women should attend metal concerts, then you are even more homoerotic than the average metal fan, and that's saying quite a lot.

Overall, it's the pseudo machoness of most heavy metal that really turns me off.

Muzak 10-11-2006 01:37 PM

I don't think male metalheads in general don't want the girls to be there, its just that most girls don't like the music so they obviously usually don't go to the shows.

In my personal experience to shows (only two so far), I have seen a lot of women. Though the male ratio was much higher in the shows, the female ratio was pretty solid. Its just the way it is; I Personally wish more girls would get into metal, it gets pretty lame if its always a sausage fest.

Those who don't think girls belong the in the shows need to rethink that opinion.

agreed

Urban Hat€monger ? 10-11-2006 01:42 PM

Lets face it , if you are a girl and you`ve spent ages getting ready to go out the last thing you`re gonna want to do is spend the night being leered at & shoved around by a bunch of sweaty teenage boys covered in acne.

Sound Devastation 10-11-2006 01:49 PM

that sounds more like your average student club than a metal show!

i dont spend any time getting ready or plan it as a night out.. i just want to turn up, watch some bands, chill out and have a chat to people.

metal nights (smaller death/trash night in particular) often seem alcohol based, rowdy... and people dont want to chat, they'd rather stand around looking 'metal'...

I was describing myself when I was a metal fan

Sound Devastation 10-11-2006 01:54 PM

metal fans round here tend to be older... or maybe thats because the venue is 18+.. eithey way they're often sweaty and smelly and drunk. :p

That doesn't really justify stereotyping all metal heads, even if you are talking about yourself. Most of the people I see at shows are easily over 20. I myself am only 16 but I do not have an acne covered face.

You are a wanker.

Have you ever listened to any female musicians? I suppose you think we shouldn't vote, wear trousers, drive, go to school, drink...

enemyat_thesix 10-11-2006 02:54 PM

Actually, I enjoy female musicians immensely. Tilly and the Wall, Camera Obscura, Metric, Blonde Redhead, Belle & Sebastian, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Deerhoof, Stars; these are a few of my favorite bands. :)
