Yeah. I'm sorry. It was wrong of me to list just that song. Theres many others I could have mentioned too.
You know. Since you said you were going to stop the Zep trolling, I was thinking of not bashing Modest Mouse anymore. Oh well, so much for that. |
Right sorry back to the subject on hand. They're the same chords and I fail to see how it isn't very plausible Jimmy Page lifted them. Dazed and Confused, Communication Breakdown, Hats Off To Roy Harper, How Many More Times, etc. Zeppelin have a history of saying songs are there own when they weren't and stealing riffs and lyrics frequently. Hell, Since I've Been Loving You took it's lyrics from Never by Moby Grape. They aren't the most moral musicians are they?

The riff in Breakdown is a homage to Eddie Cochrans Nervious Breakdown. But its by no means the same riff. How Many More Times only stole lyrics. And I don't know how many times I have to say it that Zeppelin are not known for their great lyrics anyway. Quote:

Look. I know about the damn song. Zeppelin actually asked the band if they could use that chrod progression, but Pages version of that riff came out totally different. Its not the same riff. No one listening to Taurus is gonna think "omg this is stairway to heaven, oh wait no its not".
Zeppelin played blues music. A genre so generic that the same chords were used over and over all the time. "Zeppelin has a blues song with a chord that sounds kinda similar to a chord in another blues song, never mind that most blues songs are generic and always use the same chord progressions, 0mfg Z3pp3l1n ar3 r1p 0ffs, th3y b3 t3h sux0rz!!!!111!!!". And me and ethan called truce on the Zeppelin thing, so just stfu and gtfo Bungalowbill. |
Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Thats all you got? Almost? Many blues artists use the exact same chord progressions and all you got is almost? Does it even matter that the two don't actually sound the same at all? Quote:

Like the fact you're an obnoxious douche who states things as being factual when they're not? Quote:
Look up that chord progression or any other, you will find many other songs that use that progression. Quote:

It seems to be trendy to hate Led Zeppelin nowdays, i dont know why.
Back to topic anyway. Iron Maiden - Quest For Fire. A bum note on an otherwise flawless album, Piece Of Mind. |

However, The Ramones pwn. Quote:
Even Petty said himself, that he didn't think they got anything from em'. (And yes, I have just now found this thread, so pardon my repetitive posts.) Zeppelin argument is ****in' hilarious. But of course we all know, Zep > Ramones. The Ramones may rock, but not like Jimmy ****in' Page, and Robert Plant. |
dude, double quote. But srsly, can all the led zeppelin stuff stop, it's not going to go anywhere.

Stairway To Heaven

And same point with their general success and album chart position. All zeppelin cd's just play like a greatest hits of the era, no? Is the Crunge not James Brown? I think so. I wonder why there aren't more Taurusrulz and TaurusStu names here? Same god damned thing in my opinon. But I can't agree with the Zeppelin haters 10 fold. Why constantly rehash that you hate Led Zeppelin because their thieves? We know they are, we've established that. To continuously mention it would be like constantly bashing other bands you don't like, say for example, I don't know U2. Can you imagine if people jsut went around slagging them all day? I'd go out of my ****ing mind. Or conversely because as Mill said, we should review all options here, if people constantly praised some god awful hackney artist because it was hipster-ironic to do so. I cannot imagine a world in which people and the music press at large just jumped on every new bandwagon that came along. If you go riffling through the bargain bin theres too much there that thankfully was never touted, like the strokes, or bloc party. If the store is destitute enough, maybe they thought it was once wise to purchase the kaiser chiefs. But I'm well over the line, we know no one even in bizzaro land, no one likes them. The point is folks, we certainly can't have a music industry or fan base that jumps all over the next big thing, we need to stick with blindly praising old artists that "left their mark, took it up another level, and changed everything" because if we don't, we might be forced to get our own opinions. |

As for Mary Jane's Last Dance, that might not even be about women - knowing Tom Petty and the Mary Jane reference, there's a good chance that it's about drugs. Even if it is about women, that is such a common lyrical theme in rock that I wouldn't split hairs over it. They are sort of similar in lyrical style (both ballad-like), but if you ask me, that chord progression is suggestive of a ballad. Ballads fit that progression/rhythm perfectly. |
I really don't understand why you'd even argue against them being similar, they are. Even if the song is a giant metaphor with drugs, it still deals with similar imagery of a troubled girl.
|
I'm not saying they aren't similar - I'm just saying I don't think it was ripped off.
|
With the hundreds of thousands of millions of artists out there, you are going to have plenty of similarities. John Fogerty almost got sued for alledgedly stealing a riff from his OWN damn song, back when he was in CCR. The record label tried to sue him or something, about writing a song similar to one off a CCR album. How dumb is that?
|
I wrote a paper once on that same occurrence. Cymbaline is supposedly an amalgamate of all of Shakespeare's other plays and so I wrote a play for my final year in the English program about Shakespeare on trial in the same vein as Fogerty.
|
I like Led Zeppelin. Houses of the Holy was playing when I got my first blow job. And no, I did not grow up in the 70s.
Depending on your company it IS trendy to hate certain bands. It was really, really trendy to hate Green Day for awhile... I'm glad that died down. I think Revolution 9 is horrible. |
Number 9. Number 9. Number 9. Number 9.

worst song
Metallica has done some bad **** in the past decade, but what really pissed me off was "Mama Said" on Load. I sorta gave em a chance up until that point.
Changes by Black Sabbath hurts to listen to as well |
I actually liked the Ice Cream Man by Van Halen I didn't think it was there worse song, I hate Sammy Hager, alot of people liked him I hated his voice and everything about him, I didn't like Montrose either I just never liked Sammy Hager I liked David Lee Roth, he was more of a rocker then Sammy he made the band all dance music and all that crap for that I miss the old Van Halen back when they would do Really Got Me now they were rocking then.
|
sammy hagar sucks
and is equal to fail. No one likes him. |
....he made his first post bashing Metallica. I can tell we wont get off to a very nice start. *pulls out his assault rifle*

Let's look at Metallica's two biggest albums in the past ten years: Loaded and St. Anger, I think it's fair to call it "bad shit." and I don't like Sabbath so I've never heard 'Changes' but I have heard negative comments about it by Sabbath fans before so I'd say that's also a fair comment. It's not like he insulted Paranoid or Ride the Lightning, just one Sabbath song and a few recent Metallica albums and I've never heard any 'true' Metallica fan praise their recent output.
|
I hated the Metallica cover of Bob Seger's- Turn the page
|
Forget the grenade, let's hijack a damn plane from some Al Queda airline.
I enjoyed St. Anger, while I also think it completely pales in comparison to the rest of their material. I enjoyed the 90's era quite a bit with them. Best album in my opinion......S&M.....droolworthy. |
the whole tyr album by black sabbath.
