Searching for a Good Stoner Rock Band

I listen to a lot of metal bands but I feel like listening to something different thats more laid back so please enlighten me with your infinite wisdom

TheDonald 01-09-2008 10:41 PM

I'm sure you're aware of Sublime...

Frewen 01-10-2008 02:44 AM

I assume you're also aware of the 'main' bands in the genre (Sleep, Kyuss, Fu Manchu, Nebula, Spiritual Beggars, etc)?

Vulphus 01-10-2008 02:58 AM

Kyuss- ''...And The Circus Leaves Town''

O'Bannion 01-10-2008 06:45 AM

Kyuss
Queens of the Stone Age

Try "Mountains Of Mars" by Electric Wizard. Just that song though. The rest of their material isn't quite as, er..."chilled".

I have to say what I have heard of Electric Wizard (DOPETHRONE) I'm not impressed. lazy Sabbath-esque riffs that have been heard a thousand times before. I much prefer ST.VITUS DANCE which is a Sabbath song and a great band from the early 90's

gpackin 01-10-2008 06:44 PM

Sleep is pretty good.

Come My Fanatics is a sick album. Return Trip is probably one of my favourite songs.

I second Colour Haze, I have a few albums and they are consistently amazing. Artistic and beautiful enough but with that characteristic fuzz. Mmhm.

On the topic of liking CH, Los Natas are good to check out. Meanwhile I think Fatso Jetson and Yawning Man are a must, reason being both bands include the founders of desert rock, the Lalli brothers, who are never dull.

And you know they're good when Brant Bjork talks about you like this:
Quote:

Yawning Man was the sickest desert band of all time. You’d just be up there in the desert, everybody’d just be hanging, partying. And they’d show up in their van and just, mellow, drag out their **** and set up right about the time the sun was goin’ down, set up the generators, sometimes they’d just go up there and drink beers and barbecue. Sometimes it would be a scene; sometimes it would be very intimate. It was very casual and loose and everybody would like, while they’re playing, everyone would just lounge around. They were kinda like a house band. It wasn’t militant like Black Flag. It was very drugged, very stone-y, it was very mystical. Everyone’s just tripping, and they’re just playing away, for hours. Oh, they’re the GREATEST band I’ve ever seen.

Well, Electric Wizard tends to be sludgier than a lot of stoner doom.

You might like Sahg - I. It's much more upbeat than EW and is one of my favourite stoner albums, behind Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley, which is of course the holy grail.

GravitySlips 01-12-2008 08:46 AM

Om

Soulfire77 01-12-2008 05:33 PM

The Sword - "Age of Winters"

You might also like The Black Keys (more of a blues/rock band - not metal). Try their album "Rubber Factory" or "Magic Potion".

lucylamppost 01-12-2008 06:04 PM

Hey here are some suggestions
john frusciante, allman brothers, circa survive, cat stevens, fleetwood mac, John Butler Trio, The killers ( i really enjoy there lasted album when I am stoned)
Xavier Rudd, Kinski and Silver Chair. I would try listening to an whole album straight when you are smoking, playlists can sometimes wreak the vibes

white_powered_zombie 01-12-2008 07:43 PM

I love Stoner rock, you've got to jus listen to what everyone has suggested and pick out what you like and then ask for bands which are similar... :D

Wiki is a great start=!

TheCaster 01-12-2008 07:51 PM

pboldingh 01-13-2008 03:01 PM

15Steps 01-13-2008 05:05 PM

This is terrible news, because I never saw them live.

Listen to OM.

No they haven't, but Chris has left. It's still a shame though... :/

Quote:

Om is continuing forward with a new drummer and working on a new recording. Please check omvibratory.com and this page for updates. A live vinyl only LP "Om - Live at Jerusalem" will be forthcoming. This is Chris Hakius' final release with the group. I personally apologize to east coast fans who planned on coming out to the shows. Please know that Om will be back in your area later in 08. Thank you to all of you. Live dates resume in late spring. There is a LOT of new material on its way. Shrinebuilder is also forging ahead. See you all soon. -al

Well at least they're not done.

Merkaba 02-03-2008 01:46 PM

I too wonder how different the sound will be, Chris and Al were the proper duo who had worked together for years.

WWWP 02-04-2008 01:45 AM

I second Electric Wizard - Come My Fanatics, although all Wizard is good.

I second Monster Magnet, Kyuss, Sleep (especially Dopesmoker), The Sword, Om and a few others already mentioned in this thread.

Ill add:-

Evoken - Shades of Night Descending
Pentagram - Relentless
Bongzilla - Gateway
Sunn o))) and Boris - Altar (collab)
Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
Left Hand Solution - Fevered
Loop - Wolf Flow
My Dying Bride - Turn Loose The Swans
Trouble - The Skull
Witchfinder General - Death Penalty

And, it may not be stoner rock but Opeth - Damnation

I absolutely detest Candlemass. Had the misfortune to see them live many years ago. they stank. Good call on Loop though. I much refer A Gilded Eternity though and they occupied the shoegaze side of Indie but still a great band. Witchfinder General-now that is a blast from the past. I loved them. I will have to get some stuff by them. Nice varied list.

Mojo 02-05-2008 07:59 AM

Death Penalty is a fantastic Witchfinder album. Friends of Hell wasnt as good.
