It was the reason I joined the forum.

The Kinks are probably the most British of British bands and Ray Davies has to be one of the most original songwriters ever!

something like 11 UK top 20 hits in a space of only 3 years...awesome.

Bloody fanboys :p:

While the rest of the big bands where writing about acid trips and Hindu scriptures The Kinks wrote about the hardships and inequality of the British society.

They are possible the best band in music history. (They share, in my opinion at the moment, the #1 place with The Beatles.)

I don't know about them being the best band, even of the 60's, but they're definitely one of the most underrated, and they're far better than the Beatles or Stones.

Uh no?

Well I do prefer them to The Stones, but I wouldn't say they are far better and I wouldn't even put them on the same level as The Beatles.

I prefer Kinks more pop material like Village Green and Arthur to their earlier rock n roll stuff, even though thats what people think of when they think of The Kinks.

I don't think i could ever tire of the Village Green Preservation Society, the first 6 tracks has to be one of the best run of tracks ever surely?
It's a definite contender for my favourite 60's album, which i don't say lightly. It's that element of charm again, a stupidly english band singing about rivers and jam and fat cats or whatever and it doesn't feel stupid.
I also really love the line "People take pictures of each other, to prove that they really existed". When i see my mates posing for pictures consistently on a night out i always think of that line.

You cut your list off before Animal Farm!

I agree, Davis' songwriting abilites are amazing, especially on Village Green. I don't think this album will ever get old for me.

Maybe it's because I really don't care for the Beatles...but even among my favorite artists, not many have made a rocker as tough (and perfect) as You Really Got Me, a song as beautiful as Waterloo Sunset, or have a songwriter as clever and witty as Ray Davies.

The kinks are awesome. they have such a grinding 60s crunch to them. i love their material

I am so in love with the song Stangers.
