Agreed completely. I still don't see how Lola was such a success as a single, I think Strangers is the best track off of Powerman.

The Kinks were founders of the 2 note power chord.

I liked a couple of the "newer" kinks songs also, Hatred and Working At the Factory.

Their old stuff is priceless though.

"All we lived for was to get out of the factory"

"It's just another factory"

I only have about 20 songs by The Kinks that came after 1972. Is it worth getting more? The post '72 period in The Kinks' music is usually panned by critics and fans, but a few of the songs I have are real gems, so I'm curios whether I should explore their later albums.

Well, Misfits, The Great Lost Kinks Album, and Low Budget are worth getting if you don't already have them (73', 78',79') I didn't really care for the majority of their 80's stuff..

Lola is fantastic and should not be discounted because it was a popular song.

I definitely listen to The Kinks more than The Beatles TBH. The Kinks are probably THE quintessential English band. That is not to say that their output is neccessarily better. They just tapped into the English Psyche so succinctly. What's it like to be an Englishman? Listen to The Kinks.

Arthur, Face to Face and Muswell Hillbillies (in that order).

Make sure you get the albums with bonus tracks, as a lot of their best singles weren't included on the original albums.

I downloaded a shitload of their albums recently. I've only heard Lola but it bored the shit out of me...:\
