Who Were The Best Bands Of 90s Britpop?

Just how many bands of that movement can really be described as great? Obvious nominees are Blur and Oasis. Suede started off a great band.

Who else can be said to have made a really worthy contribution to music?

right-track 02-15-2008 01:57 PM

Rock and Metal section???

Rainard Jalen 02-15-2008 02:04 PM

Well. I mean, if Oasis makes it to the Rock section, I don't see why not. Britpop is rock music at the end of the day; aside from that it was very mainstream, and most of it was major label too. So I see it as more rock than indie/alternative.

I'll add Pulp to this. I have no idea how I could have forgotten them.

Necromancer 02-15-2008 02:37 PM

Oasis in the Rock & Metal category....NO!, In my personal opinion. Indie/Alternative....Yes. I like Oasis alot as a band, They could be classified as one of the core bands within there style of music. (in my opinion) They have been around a long time & so many other bands have tried to copy there sound & style. One of the great British Bands-Oasis.

Rainard Jalen 02-15-2008 02:54 PM

Well no doubt about Oasis. I'm interested in seeing how many forgotten gems there are. If any.

haveyouheard 02-15-2008 02:57 PM

Some of my favorites

Boo Radleys
Supergrass
Powder
The Stone Roses

Rainard Jalen 02-15-2008 03:26 PM

sleepy jack 02-15-2008 05:58 PM

The Holy Bible>All

swim 02-15-2008 06:50 PM

I love the Bluetones.

Comus 02-15-2008 06:54 PM

none of them

jackhammer 02-16-2008 08:02 AM

Kula Shaker....as if!

The Charlatans are still going and predated Britpop. I think they are a good solid indie band.

The Bluetones had a couple of good tracks. I also liked Menswear too.

Stop trolling.

Supergrass were good.
I liked them.
Don't get enough recognition imo.
Put some good albums out.

jackhammer 02-16-2008 08:12 AM

The first Supergrass album has some great tracks on it esp. Lose It and Lenny. Their subsequent releases were patchy. I think they have released a single recently after a while out of the loop.

Ash, anybody?

I could never get into them personally.

BEST of nineties britpop = blur

GravitySlips 02-16-2008 11:03 AM

Most britpop I could take or leave.

That said, I like some Blur once in a while, and I love Pulp. Pulp are easily my favourite.

Do you class the Stone Roses as "britpop"? If you do, then I love them as well.

jackhammer 02-16-2008 12:39 PM

No Stone Roses were a little earlier and their debut was more mellow than what is usually associated with Britpop. I suppose Britpop could easily read Guitar-pop.

It came to mean that once people started jumping on the bandwagon and with the whole Blur vs Oasis thing but when it started it was a collection of British bands that people thought would do well.
The original Select magazine article that the term Britpop was coined featured PJ Harvey (female singer-songwriter) The Auteurs (A sort of baroque pop band) Denim (Lawrence from Felt's 70s glam rock pastiche) and Suede who at that time were doing the whole Bowie/Roxy Music thing.

The original Britpop movement from say around 92-94 had some really original bands in it doing lots of different things , after that it became a more uniformed commercial sound.

The Stone Roses are often credited with starting the genre and almost always seen as a root source of the scene.

ObiSobi 02-20-2008 02:31 PM

Oasis
The Verve
Driveshaft ;)

Rainard Jalen 02-21-2008 06:59 AM

THE VERVE! I can't believe I forgot them. BTW you know they reunited and, last I heard, should have an album out this year?

ObiSobi 02-21-2008 12:12 PM

Are you serious?! Thats awesome!

Yeah, it's true. And still on. Fantastic news. Just hope it'll be worth the wait!

GravitySlips 02-21-2008 03:13 PM

The Verve are playing a T in the Park. Hmm.

ObiSobi 02-21-2008 05:13 PM

The Verve releasing an album, the Sex Pistols working on new material and Led Zeppelin possibly reuniting for new material. Life is good.

oasis and the verve.
can anyone outside the UK tell me if they ever heard the verve?
They were here and gone in a flash but were bloody brilliant.

sleepy jack 02-22-2008 10:53 PM

Seeing as Bitter Sweet Symphony got to number 12 on the US charts its pretty safe to say people have heard of them outside the UK.

ADELE 02-22-2008 10:59 PM

That's cool.
And the Manics?
Also dodgy with good enough!!!!
Stereophonics?
Shed Seven

sleepy jack 02-22-2008 11:04 PM

The Manics weren't even that successful in the UK until they turned to complete shit.

ADELE 02-22-2008 11:12 PM

oh that is harsh!
come come dear boy.
I happen to like the manics and everything must go!

sleepy jack 02-22-2008 11:19 PM

Everything Must Go is an awful radio rock album, as is everything they've released since then. They lost all sense of direction without Richey behind them. Though Generation Terrorists and Gold Against the Soul weren't great either but I think was more because Richey didn't have any musical input on those like he did on The Holy Bible.

ADELE 02-22-2008 11:28 PM

motorcycle emptiness!!!
You love us Crowquill!!!!
ah ha ha
you love us you love you love us.

Everyone here knows of Bittersweet Symphony... it has been used on a bank ad which is slightly ironic given the lyrics. But I doubt many have heard any other Verve songs.

Rainard Jalen 02-23-2008 02:29 PM

The best Verve song is Lucky Man.

The Rolling People.

ADELE 02-24-2008 07:40 AM

No it is Sonnet and it shows how you pick their best known tracks to make out you know them by reading it in some music magazine.
It is Sonnet.

sweet_nothing 02-24-2008 08:22 AM

Oasis, you can put all of Blur's albums inculding Parklife against (What's the Story) Morning Glory and they don't even come close. And The Stone Roses are great too!

The Verve. Yes, I dont remember the particular song. It must have been a good song because I remember the band.
