How shall we defind a "90's" band, does it have to be a band that was formed in the 90's or one that was mainly known during the 90's or simply a band that performed during the 90's regardless of other periods of popularity?

sleepy jack 03-23-2008 03:40 PM

Well Foo Fighters extended to the 00s and that was the work they were mainly known for, the simply ****ty pop songs they did then and Nirvana formed in the 80s. So I think it's just any band that performed during the 90s.

The Unfan 03-23-2008 04:40 PM

I'll always have a personal liking of Stabbing Westward.

sleepy jack 03-23-2008 04:43 PM

The Magnetic Fields for me.

Inuzuka Skysword 03-23-2008 05:38 PM

Opeth...btw their new album is going to be amazing.

jackhammer 03-23-2008 06:28 PM

I don't place bands in time periods at all. This does'nt mean that I'm automatically cool. It means that time lessens with each decade.

Were they 80's? Oopps.

the13thzen 03-24-2008 01:30 AM

For me the band that embodied '90s Rock was The Smashing Pumpkins.

Alfred 03-24-2008 07:32 AM

I'd like to add The Wallflowers. I can't believe I didn't say them.

Comus 03-24-2008 08:59 AM

Anyways Pearl Jam will always be the best 90's rock band.

Farn 03-24-2008 11:26 AM

This isn't hard for me its Weezer, I don't know anyone who doesn't have the Blue Album.

It might be a cultural difference because you're in the U.K.

No I have tons of American music, I just did'nt like the album.

sleepy jack 03-24-2008 03:05 PM

I'm from America and I think Weezer are complete shit.

NSW 03-24-2008 03:09 PM

Weezer has some nice, poppy tunes that are nice to sing along too. But I don't think we'll be having any deep, thought-provoking discussions about their musical talents anytime soon.
I kinda don't see what someone being/not being from America has to do with it though...

RHCP has always been my favourite 90s band.

JBass 03-24-2008 06:04 PM

Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam...

But above all, Rage Against The Machine!!

I'm referring to the different tastes between the two people. Like the attributes a typical Brit values in rock music could be different than what a typical American might value. Not that you're inexperienced with American music or anything like that (lol).

ProggyMan 03-24-2008 06:20 PM

Public Enemy. For Rock, The Wallflowers I guess. I really love Jakob Dylan's lyrics, and he writes great choruses.

I think I know what you are trying to say but I think something like that would be more apt for mainstream music fans. The sort that would'nt post on this site lol. Buddy Holly is a class track though.

Was "Say It Ain't So" one of them, cause' thats one of the songs everyone liked at least where I live.

jackhammer 03-24-2008 06:43 PM

I really cannot remember TBH. I played the album maybe twice. I think I may have it on mp3 somewhere, I'm sure it was with bonus tracks too.

Comus 03-25-2008 08:48 AM

Buddy Holly is the best song off the album and dare I say one of the only good ones.

teshadoh 03-25-2008 10:52 AM

90's are still probably my favorite music decade - sebadoh, superchunk, archers of loaf, guided by voices, fugazi, poster children, ween, flaming lips, built to spill, liz phair, yo la tengo, unwound, slint (spiderland). Really the last time I really gave a **** about music.

But my favorite? I'll go with Sebadoh.

ProggyMan 03-25-2008 10:47 PM

They had like one live album in the 90's...

djchameleon 03-26-2008 01:05 AM

I'm going to have to go with smashing pumpkins....after hearing bullet with butterfly wings I was hooked

Mr Nic 03-26-2008 07:32 AM

Rock / Metal Bands (and albums) that sum up the 90s (for me):

Sugar (especially Copper Blue / Beaster)
Radiohead (The Bends)
Beck (Mellow Gold)
Jane's Addiction (Ritual)
Deftones (Adrenaline)
Smashing Pumpkins (Gish / Siamese)
Pixies (Trompe)
Sepultura (Chaos AD)
Faith No More (Angel Dust)
Ministry (Psalm 69)
Metallica (Black Album)
Coal Chamber (S/T)
Shelter (Mantra)

Corgan.

He did what he could, with the resources allowed to him. Almost the entirety of Siamese Dream, with the exception of the drums, was recorded by Billy himself. It's a 90's staple.

Needless to say, the Pumpkins were the greatest group of the 90's. They continue to be the greatest group of the 00's.

That's going a little overboard, wouldn't you say? I mean, they were ONE of the great bands of the 90's, but I definitely wouldn't say that even remotely carried over into the 00's.

15Steps 03-26-2008 07:05 PM

Blur
Primus
RHCP
Pearl Jam
Soundgarden

TheJew 03-26-2008 09:41 PM

Hands down, Nirvana or RATM.
They both brought so much game to the table.
