Show him the music that you like and try to get him to spill why he listens to his music and how he relates to it, if you can get him to realize he listens to it because it's trendy then he'll realize that he's got to find something that he really likes; sadly this leaves a chance that he actually sees something in Disturbed.

It is if you sprinkle the right kind of salt of your CD before you play it.

Still doesn't change the fact that rap(modern at least) just blows.

EDIT: Okay, I might sound like a bit of a hypocrite but I don't really care. I just heard Rebel Without A Pulse by Public Enemy and it's really good. I really thought crappy artists like 50 Cent and Eminem were the only rap out there.

Nope, around here some popular ones are GZA, and da Wu-Tang Clan which really aren't half bad.^

I, personally, can't stand Disturbed, the vast majority of Trapt, and Linkin Park's new album is probably one of the worst things I've ever heard. SOAD is alright.

How can I make my son stop listening to these bands? Especially Disturbed.

I can't kill him, so I think I need to find something to replace those bands. Something extraordinarily better. I don't know how far I'll get him away from this "pop" radio music style, but I'd like to try. Also, no heavy metal.

It's really annoying to talk to him about music, I really need some help. He's in seventh grade and it's pretty vital to him that the music is "cool" and not "emo".

There's gotta be soemthing out there, right?

Thanks if you try to help.
if you want to bridge the gap you're going to have to make the first move. his music is how he identifies himself. to try to force him to listen to your 'old' stuff isn't going to fly. check around the net for interviews with the bands you listed. find out who their specific influences are then introduce them to it using the fact that you read an interview with one of the band members who claims their life was changed after hearing a specific album. a few google searches should get you setup.

if all you want is a band name from your own adolescence that he might dig on also go with nine inch nails.

Hey cmon..soad and disturbed aren't THAT bad.
I'm sure every1 here would have listened to them one time or the other in their life
They do have some good music...just that it gets old real quick.
Be happy he doesn't listen to stuff like souljaboy, or any of that pop cr@p.

You shouldn't dictate what your kids listen to. That just makes you no better than the religious parents who wouldn't let their kids listen to rock n roll back in the 50s.

Do try to expand their horizons though. Introduce them to some different stuff, even if its stuff you don't like yourself. Anythings better than Disturbed.
