as a band - i still own copies of dirt, jar of flies, and the self-titled album. even bought the tab books for dirt and the s/t and learned to play the bulk of those albums. never owned the unplugged album but heard it more than enough times. all i know from 'facelift' is 'man in the box'.

bought 'boggy depot' on release. maybe i need to pull it out again to try a re-evaluation but from what i remember it was just another sludgy 90s rock album. cantrell may well be cool as ice cream but that doesn't mean his output gets a carte blanche just because he was in a seminal band back in the day (at least not to my ears).

saw a few clips of staley on his own and to me it seemed he was doing his best to channel AiC through whatever backing band he had going and it just wasn't there.

Okay, so good to hear. For a minute there, I thought you weren't familiar with their their albums and just started talking about of your ass. If I were you, I'd give Facelift a listen. And you're right about Cantrell - Boggy Depot was very reminiscent of AIC, and for that, I didn't dig it the first few times I heard the album, either. Even after acknowledging it for what it is, I still skip through a couple songs for the simple fact that I have my own problems and I find no interest in hearing Jerry moan about his. I feel like we're switching roles here, but Jerry does get boring to me sometime. His vocal range isn't that impressive and lyrically, he's kind of a pussy.

no worries. i realize i come across as a bit pretentious sometimes but, whatever. i'm older than the average user here, i don't look up much info about the 90s when i can just remember being a teenager instead. i also generally try to shy away from talking about stuff i don't have a fair amount of knowledge about hehehe.

as for Cantrell and his lyrics... well he never did shy away from calling Elton John one of his biggest influences back in the 90s haha

Big fan of Jerry, mostly for how well his voice backed up Layne's, everytime I watch the MTV Unplugged dvd of AIC I always get goosebumps watching them both. Wonderful.

I have posted with Mr Dave since way back in the day I can confidently say the man never talks out of his ass. Very knowledgeable member he is. As for Cantrell being a "lyrical pussy'', that's kind of harsh.

mr dave: I rather like your approach when it comes to discussing music you're knowledgeable about. I think a lot of us here google everything to come across as knowledgeable about the music we're into (or not into). I didn't know you were an old-timer. :P I would have guessed otherwise.

Crash_override: I'm well-aware that mr dave doesn't talk out of his ass. I think I'm just too quick to catch people doing that because I'm kind of a dip**** like that. And yeah, lyrical pussy was kind of harsh, but some of **** just gets to be waaay too sappy for me. I, do, however, love the lyrics to "Settling Down" off of Boggy Depot. It scared me the first few times because I thought it meant that I wasn't ready for a relationship. Go figure.

no worries. most people don't think i'm in my 30s when they see me in person either

when it comes to older stuff i much prefer relying on the old noggin as opposed to google as it affords a far more unique perspective on the issue. it's one thing to use the net to fact check dates or track lists but it's another thing entirely to base your 'opinion' on something you rewrote from wikipedia hehehe.

I agree with you both. In fact, I'm feeling especially emotional tonight, so Boggy Depot is going in now.

nice, next time i'm digging through my binder of discs i'll definitely have to keep an eye out for it. although i'm not sure if i still own it, may have pawned it a few years ago to help a friend pick up an autoharp.
