If this was aimed at me I never said there was. I just said when the lyrical delivery of cheesy religious themes takes priority over the music and it's very difficult to ignore I can't stand it. That's why I dislike most of Bob Dylan's religious music. I mean it being his typical 80s stuff (bad) aside, his lyrics took a turn for the worst and the whole album reeks of Christianity and there's no way it can be dismissed as just "Christian undertones."

Trouble is a great Christian Doom Metal band so I obviously like a bit of Christian music, but I am honestly displeased when the lyrical message comes before the music, and that isn't strictly with Christian music.

i don't think you'll find anyone to argue against music in modern society being about personal expression (although on this site there might be some who would just for spite).

but your 2nd statement is bogus. it seems you're implying the purpose of music is to promote personal expression AND christianity and should not be separated.

no one here has said religion couldn't be part of music, only that within modern contexts it usually sucks - A LOT. it's only really been the last century or two that music for the masses has truly become secular in an overwhelming fashion. but i really believe the switch from sacred to secular has far more to do with advancements in technology than anything else.

i think crowquill nails it as far as why average people in today's society don't bother with religious music. it's lame formulaic dreck that fails to distract from the ham fisted sermonizing posturing as lyrics.
Sorry, I wasn't clear with the second one. I meant that alienating any subject, Christianity or otherwise, from music contradicts the purpose of music, which is to express yourself through melodic or harmonic sounds. I just used Christianity since that is what this thread is about.

I honestly don't know too many Christian bands, metal or otherwise. I guess the closest ones I can think of are probably Devil Wears Prada and Norma Jean (If you guys consider them Christan bands). They're alright to me, but my god they suck live. Saw the former at Sounds of the Underground last year and was glad I walked in at the end of their set.

I don't even like metal and I can name several. UnderOATH, As I Lay Dying, The Chariot, Life in your Way, August Burns Red, Gwen Stacy, Bloody Sunday, xdeathstarx, Still Remains, At the Throne of Judgment, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, Bloodlined Calligraphy, Haste the Day, Blessed By a Broken Heart, Zao, Demon Hunter and of course Stryper.

Aside from metal I find it kind surprising you don't know many especially with Reliant K and Switchfoot getting so big recently. Them aside there's Kids in the Way, Emery, Flyleaf, Anberlin, P.O.D., Stellar Kart, Hawk Nelson and "country" music generally promises christian values and sometimes even just christanity. Christianity is pretty popular in music and there's always going to be bands popping up with that kind of message to appeal to the kids. If you don't know any you're just not looking around.

The majority of bands that include Christianity in their music just sound really really cheesy in the way they try to do it. To me there are only a couple of bands that can pull it off well and that would be mewithoutYou, Mineral, and Brand New.
