Metallica or Megadeth (singer, bass, favorite band, mp3, albums)

I wouldnt mind it if people were actually talking about Metallica or Megadeth but this thread was done a long time ago. Now its just full of posts like these -

Like many young tennagers, growing up in the 90's (yes im sort of young), I had gotten into Metallica at an early age, (around 14) and being the computer wiz I was in the first generation of mp3 file sharing (aka pre-napster) I was having a whale of a time downloading and listening to several of low quality Metallica songs. By this time Metallica was my favorite band, having only really listened to albums of my parents before this I was amazed at feeling you get when you first discover something new, we all get it, no matter how old we are. This feeling continued for quite some time during my adolesence and I began to discover more diverse and defferent kinds of music, including some different types of metal. It was probably around the time shortly after the Napster issue that I realized that my adolescent stint with Metallica would never become something more than that. At this time, several years after, having discovered countless great non-commercial music and picking up bass guitar for the first time, looking back at those days I find it quite comical. Metallica, a band that I believe should be reserved for the ignorant when it come to music, can be used as a stepping stone to great music. But serves no greater purpose in this world.

In conclusion I say, Megadeth certainly isn't my favorite band, but they have stayed true to what they are and I hold alot more respect for them. Therefore, I vote for Megadeth.

My comment wasnt aimed at you, by the way. I feel I should make that clear but of course it is good that you have took the time to offer a well thought out opinion. After all, that is your opinion so sharing it on a site such as this is certainly a good thing.

I just think this thread has run its course. You can look back through the last few pages of this thread and very little is actually worth the time you spend reading it, not that it takes long.

Also just to comment on your post I have a question. Do you think the fact you play bass also has a lot to do with your opinion on Metallica? I have often wondered this as I know a number of guitarists who like Metallica but quite a few bass players who don't and when I think about it I think its a possibility that I would share the opinion if I was a bass player. Cliff Burton was a good bass player but Jason Newsted was in the band for what, 12 years? And he didnt seem to contribute a single thing.

I agree, posts like this run their course on themselves quite quickly.

I wasn't trying to seem defensive, just doing my best Obama impression to try and stimulate this thread.

As I see the situation from a bass player POV. Newstead is a far superior technical bassist, although he was also a much larger d-bag. Cliff Burton was cool, metal, and raw. He also had chops, but was sort of sloppy. So take your pick really.

You are right, Metallica has never been a bass players band.

I dont play bass, so cannot have a fully educated opinion on the matter of course but it just appeared that Burton was much more involved and much more a part of the band back then. He contributed a lot more. The fact that he did and Newsted didnt is not necessarily Newsteds fault of course, I understand that but even then Newsted just never really captured Burton's bass parts for me. I listen to Burton and it makes me want to make more of an effort with my bass, i listen to Newsted and I think I'd be better off learning something else.

Yeah I agree, Burton is alot more likeable than Newsted. Plus, I think the band would have been better off picking a replacement closer to Burtons style, rather than pulling a 180 and expecting the same results.
