Well, I guess that's a good point... Genesis, Pink Floyd, and a good many other "eccentric" seventies acts were very much commercial and non eccentric by the late eighties, and I guess its arguable that Queen didn't become as hoary as these tired two were getting....

And, well, as for the Stones... I probably don't have to continue on this line of thought...

You can call Queen a lot of things but when thing you certainly can't call them is unoriginal, at least during the 70s.

I actually think The Game was a damn good pop album but yeah everything after that was pretty f*cking lame.

In fairness to alot of these bands, it must really, really be hard to come up with all new ideas... think of all the things straining against your creativity originality.... overfamiliarity with your bandmates, a legacy and a standard to maintain, commercial pressures from yourself, your record company, the need to pay for the merc, the jag and the mansion and the wife's obsession with gold jewellery...

All this stacks up against your orginality, free thinking and in short your creativity.... ultimately the best solution for some is to give in, make the cookie cutter album, satisfy the fans, fill the coffers and give yourself less headaches...

... but whats that gnawing feeling in the pit of your stomach... yes, you used to make better stuff and you know it...

So you see, there's quite the dilemma!

I think anybody would be very hard pressed to find a group out there that sounded as good as they did when the more or less started (an impossibility for many as they got old, I know) but as you say commercialism and earning money, largely takeover from the creative element in favour of dishing out stuff that they know will probably sell.

In fact the only group that I can think of, that sound as good as when they first started is Dream Theater (hahaha just had to stick that one in as I know they have many fans on this forum)

I'd add the Church to that list too... one of those rare bands that actually got BETTER with age... their most recent release was absolutely amazing, my favorite release of 2009...

Beat that U2... No Line on the Horizon doesn't hold up after listening to Untitled # 23...
