Default Avant Rock / Non-Prog Non-Indie Experimental

I propose that all avant-rock and experimental rock music that doesn't quite fall under either prog or indie should have a place to be posted within this section somewhere. Maybe the subforum at the top could be expanded for these purposes. I don't think it makes any sense at all that things like The Boredoms and 60s Frank Zappa are not going somewhere under rock and instead end up in Avant Garde! Just a suggestion. Zappa, Krautrock etc are important products of rock music and the rock era.

I am completely happy for the aforementioned bands to stay where they are. However a dedicated Krautrock thread would be a good idea. Zappa also made Classical music but he also played a lot of Jazz Fusion so I think he is justified in that forum as it is also an Experimental forum and that is after all what Zappa constantly did.

The problem in my opinion Lee is that these bands receive a lack of attention in that particular forum, and might garner more interest or at least receive a higher profile if they were closer to this forum.

If it's avant rock, I could see it going to the prog section if its not something that can fall under Indie.

But we already have an avant garde section so I don't see the point in this.

The point is that it MAY have too much of a low profile under the Avant Garde section in which case more discussion might be generated if it were where it belongs i.e. Freak Out! for example is a Rock album, there is no doubt about it being Rock, it is even significantly less experimental than a lot of stuff appearing under rock, so yeah, it should be under the Rock section.

I think your subforum in that case could read prog, psychedelia, classic rock and avant rock perhaps...

Thats a bit pointless, most avant rock could be considered progressive rock. What you consider to be avant rock is probably also considered to be some form of progressive rock.

I think prog is a broad enough term to cover what you're talking about, it's not just bands like Pink Floyd and Genesis. Anything from Zappa to The Residents could be considered prog.

LOL. I don't have a problem with it being called prog at all. If the definition of prog can encompass ambient experimental, noise and so forth, then fine. But personally I don't think prog is usually used with those sorts of connotations in mind so I don't think it would do any harm to use a term like avant rock or whatever to make it extra clear.

The meaning of my "non-prog non-indie" statement is that the band itself and most fans of the band would not quite see it as being captured under terms like "prog" and "indie". So it's really about self-definition. If neither term is really appropriate in the minds of fans and the general commentary on a particular band, then that ought to be respected.

Anything thats avant rock could go under either Indie (most of this music is on an Independant label, Indie fans like avant garde, isn't that enough?) or prog or avant garde. I want to keep my sub-section title the way it is, for me it's a section for the more classic rock/prog leaning fans, so if you're talking about stuff like Glenn Branca then it should go to the Indie or Avant Garde section. I don't want to broaden my section more than it already is, and I don't want people to go willy nilly asking for every genre in existance to get it's own section. Again it could go under prog, indie or avant garde, if it can't fall under at least one of those than its probably something really obscure that no one will even pay any attention to.
