Quoted for truth.

Meshuggah is a very different idea. It's certainly not for everyone. I like them because of their odd time signatures and I can space-out on something heavy.

Their discography is solid and they have a fair amount of fans (check their last.fm page and then take into account not everyone uses last.fm to get an idea). Their already an institution and will be remembered as legends in their own right.

Destroy Erase Improve is a fantastic album as are Chaosphere and Nothing after that though I got fed up with the band and found them too robotic, maybe its just a shift in my personal tastes.

There certainly are quite a few melodic passages in a lot of meshuggahs works, unless you're using a different definition of melody. Either way their music is far more groove driven than melody driven and I don't see why that would constitute it as being "just noise".

Lou Reed - Metal Machine Music
Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy
The Gerogerigegege - Senzuri Champion

"Djent" is an onomatopoeia. If you can't deduce how that moniker came about after listening to even one Meshuggah song, you need more help than just understanding what "djent" means.

So what do people think of Koloss? I'm kind of on the fence, it's perfectly heavy and sounds very much like Meshuggah doing what they do, but I'm not sold on some of the solos, particularly the one in "Narrow".

Haven't had a chance to listen all the way through as of yet, but I'm with you--the solo on "The Demon's Name Is Surveillance" is pretty awful when looked at in context to the rest of the song. Not sure what they were trying to do there.

I thought Koloss was a weaker album than Obzen and certainly weaker than the rest of their discography. There are only a couple songs I really enjoyed on the album. It has been said that Meshuggah was taking a more organic approach, but I think they thought this was achievable by slowing down their songs. The relentless pummeling of Meshuggah is great when it is at Meshuggah speed. Slowed down, however, it is incredibly boring.

It does kind of seem like Meshuggah's songs are starting to get boring. It seems like the songs in Koloss have the same beat as some of the songs in Obzen, but that might just be me. I still enjoy to listen to a Meshuggah song every now and then though.
