Lars is probably not even the best drummer in Metallica, so James Hetfield.

Dude, Lars is not THAT bad. He's just extremely over-rated.

Well, I wasn't being completely serious but James Hetfield is unquetionably the better musician. Lars is a poor, poor drummer.

I cannot stand Lars Ulrich's actual drum technique. It always seems over complicated but I have a friend who is a drummer and rates him highly.

so yeah, James.
I concur. Hetfield is a brilliant rhythm player.

Are there really any notable 'bad' rhythm players?

There aren't many full stop really and Metallica rely a huge amount on Hetfield's playing. He is always musically very tight and is probably the glue that holds them together.
